SO this is like buying a $50 case of beer: it seems extravagant, but has little ability to negatively affect your bottom line in the long run.

Little ability to affect your bottom line, but it has the ability to affect your neighbors bottom line. I heard a few conversations that this could have some big ripples through the coaching ranks and cause the cost of a decent coach to go through the roof.

I dont see how thats the case. The supply of promising but inexperienced NHL coaches isnt going to go away and the number of teams in need that are willing to drastically overspend for a coach has plummeted.

The NHL can barely put a good product on these days; I'm not going to lose any sleep if they jump off a cliff financially.

Despite the $50 mill, Babcock is taking a big risk: his legacy could be tarnished. If successful in T.O., he might supersede Scotty Bowman
Oh ffs, Toronto. Babcock can't even touch Bowman's jockstrap.

The price of doing business just went up. I don't think it matters if the crop of available coaches is any good.

Well, let's see if Babcock is involved in personnel...because if that knocked the price up, then maybe it's not that big of a deal to the landscape...

And yes, Babcock would need to win need to stop getting knocked out in the first round so often for starters, if he wants to get in the same atmosphere as Bowman...THN has been a rag for years, but man, that's brutal...

I hope Babcock enjoys his time on that plane, since it's the last time for a while he'll see two wings with Leaf logos doing their job.

That contract is one of the most ridiculous things I have seen in professional sports.

Apparently Buffalo is pissed. Believed they had come to terms and were planning a press conference only to be used as leverage for more term and more coin from Toronto.

My favorite Scotty Bowman quote goes along the lines of "When I had good players, everybody thought I was a good coach; when I had bad players, everybody thought I was a bum." Babcock can only do so much, and I think the law of diminishing returns has definitely come into play with this contract. And Babcock, as good as he is, is not Scotty Bowman. Heck, he even lost a SC finals series to Dan Bylsmagic.

If toronto wins a cup on his watch, hes the best ever. Its toronto though, so that wont happen. Not even if ontario sells it to the united states.

Babcock's hiring doesn't radically alter dynamic of TOR's search for a new GM. Both external and internal candidates under consideration.

Potential external candidates incl George McPhee, Mike Futa, Jeff Gorton, Julien Brisebois. Internal candidates incl Mark Hunter/Kyle Dubas.
Oh please sign George McPhee. (I'm guessing they'll actually sign Hunter.)

LeBrun & Burnside did some discussion on the Babcock deal. Only real thing of note in the article is the little bit I'm quoting. Everything else is kinda stuff already known.
LEBRUN: Well I can tell you this, Babcock’s hire immediately changes the perception of the Toronto market for players around the league. It’s a place many didn’t want to go to. Now that has changed.

I don't know about that. Players avoid Toronto because of the media scrutiny. Babcock can't change that.

Who cares what coaches are paid? It's not like it's coming out of the cap.

Should be interesting to see how he does with the Leaves.
