Flyers hire a new coach

According to the Flyers twitter, and a number of sports writers, the Flyers have hired North Dakota (University) coach Dave Hakstol is the new Flyers head coach.

Hextall's son played for Hakstol. FWIW.

Flyers are weird... on paper, this team should have been a playoff team and possibly even an eastern conference contender, on ice, this team is garbage. We'll see how this coaching hire plays out for them... it's either going to be awesome or awesomely bad. Either way it should be fun to watch.

Pasted over from the Hockey Randomness thread

Flyers hire Dave Hakstol as head coach. Hakstol has piloted North Dakota's team since 2004. UND fans have been screaming for him to be fired for the last few years, so of course he gets the Philly job. I have to give the Flyers credit for going taking the path less traveled. Very rarely do NCAA coaches make the jump directly to NHL head coach.

Hakstol is an intense man, a yeller, a shouter...they're going to need to assistants to be a liaison between player and head coach...

UND is the most pro-style program in NCAA, but I don't know how well his coaching style will translate to the pro game. Yelling and screaming at pros usually wears thin. Just ask Torts or Mike Keenan.

He's louder...but he's also good tactically like HCMJ...I feel like UND produces less NHL talent than they did in the early part of his tenure...but that could be anecdotal...just like HCMJ with the Memorial Cup, Hakstol is always in the Frozen Four but never won one...

A lot of pro players do not care for this type of coach...they had a fairly demanding coach in Berube, this guy is at another level on that front...as meow alluded to, that's not always a match for the pro game...he gets his defense involved a lot offensively, traditionally speaking, which would be great because none of Philly's d-men can skate or pass...so that should lead to some discomfort for Hakstol until Sanheim and Ghost are ready...

Johnston also had some NHL experience prior to his hiring. Hakstol has none.

One of my meathead Flyers fan friends is all pumped up about this, so I'm assuming it's a bad idea.

Hopefully hilarity will ensue.

I am less confident of this now than I was with Berube. That was a stone cold lock.
