Brendan Smith was just in on a 2 on 0 with Tomas Nosek in an overtime...so I guess there was a tragic accident that we just didn't hear about yet...

The Devils haven't been in an overtime game in like two months, this is their first shootout game since the second game of the season (!)...lucky.

NJ just gets one. That should put a fork in them just about. Buffalo's loss and the NJ OTL should finish them off. Down to five teams for two spots.

With the way this race has been, I'm not counting anybody out.

The regulation wins tiebreaker could very well come into play which the Pens own by at least 3 over the other 4 (likely) competitors. (Tied with Buffalo and 1 behind NJ)

Time to get rid of the loser point.

Either increase OT to 7 mins or introduce "backcourt" violations (or both) and go back to 2 points for a win and 1 for a tie

Or just go 3-2-1 and make every game worth the same, at the very least.

Avs are gonna need to shore up their defense and goaltending before the playoffs if they want to go anywhere this year.

It's tough to shore up goaltending at this point...

Yeah, which gives me little confidence in the Avs chances this time around.

I'm not a big avs believer this year either.

Dallas is legit. So much depth, blend of experienced vets and young and hungry guys. Oettinger either gives up 0 or 4, which plays well in a 7 gamer.

I mean the 3rd line is benn-johnston-stankoven

Yeah, I've been betting against the Avs in some choice spots or at least taking overs...I don't trust them, I also think that MacKinnon "over plays" the game sometimes and ends up being his own worst enemy...

I've been trying to find the words to describe exactly what you said about Nate Dogg. I still can't define it but "over plays" is a good summary.

Still love the guy though. But do less.

Just for my understanding: "overplays" in this situation is "tries too hard", "holds on to the puck too much trying to make a play and turns it over", or some combo of the two?

Yeah, that's probably a pretty fair representation of it...he has a fair bit of wasted motion and energy for me, a ton of stickhandling that sometimes doesn't put him in a better situation. It's like being a really great player getting a breakaway on a horrendous goalie. The goalie sometimes isn't good enough to understand the deke that he was "supposed" to bite on because it all happened too fast.

MacKinnon does a million puck touches in a minute, a thousand starts and stops...and look, he's productive. It's working for now. But once he falls out of his athletic prime, how will he adapt? He works harder (and better) to generate shooting lanes than passing lanes...I'd love to know how many of his assists are off rebounds and missed shots compared to a purer playmaker like Crosby or McDavid.

Over-handler, over-player...super talent, but I think his game is more flawed than people give it discredit for...

Apart from not OT, what outcome helps us most in the Wings/Caps game tomorrow? Wings because we are competing for both the Metro 3 and WC with the Caps but Wings can only get the WC?

But mostly, end in regulation.

Habs have 2 vs Wings and 1 each against Isles and Flyers. Would be nice if they could step up a couple times.

And now there's 2 for the Caps. I guess we need to root for them to hold on or for the Wings to get 3 just to avoid OT.
