I know TV ratings are down significantly around the NHL. Evidently, the Canes had an outdoor game that I heard nothing about, and we are in their TV market. Nothing in the papers or on TV sports. That's par for the course here, and the Canes aren't exactly new in these parts.
The game sold well - 50K+ in Carter Finley Stadium. Not too shabby.

An Athletic writer pointed out how poorly it was marketed nationally. It's not just your area. I think most hockey fans didn't even know it was this weekend.
Seems like the bloom is off the outdoor game's rose.

Seems like they're cool if you're at the stadium, but they suck to watch on tv and I can only assume they suck to play in.

I also had no idea. And I’m on the ice with 40 8U kids three times a week. Not a peep from them about it

They suck to watch in person honestly. It's a cool experience for like 30 minutes but you can't see **** in those stadiums as far as the actual game goes.Seems like they're cool if you're at the stadium, but they suck to watch on tv and I can only assume they suck to play in.

Maybe I'm wrong but I wonder how much of the viewership decline is due to NHL games continuing to be on cable sports stations. It is hard for cord cutters to watch them. I may join them when my current Comcast deal ends.
The thing is, you can get ESPN+ for $10 a month, $15 with the Disney+ and Hulu package (I actually get it free with my Verizon plan) and watch most out of market NHL games, but to get AT&T Sportsnet in market you need a cable or sat package, or FUBO TV for $75 a month. I guess you could use a VPN and get the Pens games locally but how many non-techie people know how to do that?
You can find an illegal stream but many are not comfortable with that, and if they are those numbers don't get counted as official viewers anyway.
I also, as referenced in the NJ GDT, had no idea there was an outdoor game that day, and I follow a bunch of NHL content on social.

I knew about the game, but wasn't interested in watching. There have been so many outdoor games that they've lost their uniqueness. Not to mention that the poor ice quality causes the game to be played a lot slower than normal. They should have kept it to one or two games at most a season.

Two, if you count the heritage game that gets no coverage in the US.

NHL fans: there are too many outdoor games!
Also NHL fans: why didn’t they tell me there was an outdoor game!
They sold out, it’s good for the local market, and the NHL didn’t hit everybody over the head with it. Seems like a win win.

You're not wrong. New jerseys for every game, big local boost. Gotta figure the economics work. I always say I'm not the target customer for those games.

Yes, they're actually less entertaining than a regular game to watch on TV.I knew about the game, but wasn't interested in watching. Also, HNIC aired Leafs/Habs rather than the NHL totally clearing the sked for the outdoor game. For whatever that's worth.

Do they use the app streaming numbers like ESPN+ or Fubo in the ratings?Maybe I'm wrong but I wonder how much of the viewership decline is due to NHL games continuing to be on cable sports stations. It is hard for cord cutters to watch them. I may join them when my current Comcast deal ends.
