it is a little crazy that Carolina lost every game by 1 goal and 3 of the games in OT or the last five seconds of regulation
albeit it’s not exactly the greatest thing to say that your team was incapable of closing out games

Look, they lost 4 straight one-goal games, effectively 3 of those in sudden death situations.
It is what it is. Easily could have gone the complete other way. The series was almost perfectly even - one team got the big goals and the other didn't.
Can't say this enough, it's hard to win and if luck doesn't fall your way, forget about it

The thing that makes it tenable is that the Stanley Cup Playoffs are the longest and most arduous. Unlike, say, the NFL where you can win as a few as two games and end up in the Super Bowl...you're more subject to luck in a two-game sample than in a 20 game sample...

and I’d say that that’s not necessarily only true about the NHL playoffs but other sports as well. The Heat are making a similar run from an 8 seed position. The 9-7 Giants beat the 16-0 Pats, etc etc

I'm not saying the Panthers got all the luck. But my two biggest examples of this...
Pens are down 2-0 to Washington in the 2nd round in 2009. Letang scores from 50 feet in game 3 OT on a shot that hits 9 things and finds its way in. That could have just as easily been John Erskine and we don't even sniff the cup.
Washington is down 2-0 to Columbus in the first round in 2018. Columbus hits 3 posts in overtime before Lars Eller wins it. Millimeters from caps going out in round 1, yet they win the cup instead.
It's hard to win and you need good fortune
