I agree with meow (ohhhh, it burns) and I think it's misrepresented by KC.

The rule is shoulder height anywhere in play. And the exception is if it results in a goal the standard becomes crossbar height.
He batted it above the crossbar but below his shoulder to knock it down. Then he skates around with it and takes a regular shot. The fact that it rebounded off the goalie on the bat is not determinative as the bat itself did not result in a goal.

The verbiage of the rule is pretty clear, "When an attacking player causes the puck to enter the opponent’s goal by contacting the puck above the height of the crossbar . . . the goal shall not be allowed. " Had the puck gone into the goal off of the bat, the goal would be disallowed. Instead, the puck rebounded back to the attacking player, and a second shot attempt was made, resulting in a goal.

The USA Hockey definition is even more clear, stating that the puck must go 'directly' in the net for the crossbar standard to be invoked. But that's not the NHL rule verbiage.
Tangentially, I'd also say that the bat wasn't close to being above the 'normal height of the shoulder' either, as the attacking player was leaning over. But that's not really been mentioned by anyone that I can see, nor is it in dispute.

That would be inconsistent with almost all other rules. It also permits/encourages sticks being high, which is the antithesis of the intent of the rule...
