It's tough...I think that player is in distress, but I'd really like a shot to go wide or a play to die before I blow the play dead there...while they're buzzing around, it's tough...

I don’t want to come off as a dinosaur or something, but having your ear 3 inches from the ice then getting hit in said ear...not a lot of sympathy from me. Also, I’d be much more concerned with an unconscious player as opposed to a player in distress. An unconscious player gets an immediate whistle no matter what is going on in the play.
