^ I bet on him to lead the tourney in goals...it's good value at +1800 or whatever he was...

Finland has a squad this year...

Last year's final is on NHL Network right now. A lot of talent in that one. Petterson, Nylander, Hart, Steel, Foote

Not a huge fan of his game overall, but what he did to the Dub is a sick joke...

What don't you like? I'll admit I think he is great, but I've heard some "expects" label him a franchise goalie, which I don't see. Mid to upper-mid second tier keeper.

He plays the game like he's 6'5" sometimes...I don't really care for the RVH guys when they get to their post setups on plays that originate high, because half the league can make that shot, that short side high shot...and I feel like he's just a little too quick to jump right into that setup, even when a situation doesn't call for it...and maybe someone like Ben Bishop can get away with cheating like that because he's 6'15", but Hart is 6 foot flat...

Also, his stick positioning is just garbage...it's just along for the ride most of the time...I'm a big "use your stick" guy, so...

Not saying he's not talented...I just don't trust him to be anything special...

The thought among fans is that he's perhaps the best goalie prospect ever. The middle ground is: best prospect since Price. And the more conservative folks have him below the two Russians: Seshtyorkin and Sorokin...

Use your stick as an aggressive weapon with pokechecks or as a passive element to control rebounds?

Little preview...

USA

Farabee (PHI) - Hughes (2019) - Wahlstrom (NYI)

That line is gonna be tough to stop. The first overall pick in 2019 Jack Hughes will have a big time gunslinger on his right in Wahlstrom and then the useful and industrious Farabee with him...could be the line of the tournament. Look out for Evan Barratt (CHI) and Sasha Chmelvski (SJ) to be impact players as well.

Quinn Hughes (VAN) on the back end is really all we need, he and his brother Jack should tear this tournament apart, as they're a cut above nearly everyone...it's a shame Joey Keane (NYR) was a late cut for Kemp (EDM) and St. Ivany (PHI) just because he went the major junior route instead of the NCAA route. I do wonder how the freshman sensation K'Andre Miller (NYR) will fair in a big spot...he's doing silly things as an 18 year old d-man at Wisconsin.

Spencer Knight (2019) should provide the goaltending needed to put the US in contention for gold.

Canada

This tournament is always Canada's to lose, but they have lost it recently outside the 2018 gold...usually it falls to their goaltending...this year is no different, it's gonna be an adventure...they don't have a true starter yet...the plucky battler Mikey DiPietro (VAN) and the more anchored Ian Scott (TOR) are still fighting for the starting role as we enter round robin play. I question the defense a little bit this year too, actually, Evan Bouchard is a dummy, but his best offense is tough to match at this level...if he has to defend for any length of time, Canada is sunk...Ty Smith (NJ) and Jared McIsaac (DET) might not find enough time to help salvage this thing...

Jesus, though, this forward group is absurd...clearly the best in the tournament...guys like Comtois (ANA), Frost (PHI), Hayton (Arz), Lafreniere (2020), Formenton (OTT)...just sprinkled throughout the lineup means that Canada can score away their problems if they want...this team might not win the gold, but if they do, it's going to be from hitting overs...

Finland

This is a gold medal contender for me. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen (BUF) is now familiar with North American hockey because he plays in Sudbury...his shuffle ability is a little goof-enomics but other than that, he's a stud. How about this though: Jokiharju (CHI) and Vaakanainen (BOS) are back from the NHL (!) to help this cause...that's insane...bolstering a group that already has Heinola (2019) and Honka (2019).

Then the future 2nd overall pick in Kaapo Kakko (a good mid-range pick to lead the tournament in, well, whatever he wants) joins with Aleksi Heponiemi (FLA), Rasmus Kupari (LA), Anton Lundell (2020) and back from the NHL/AHL Eeli Tolvanen (NSH) to make Finland a tough out...they have been a dog mess in this tournament the last three years and I think they have revenge on their mind...they need to get over the little brother syndrome with Sweden to do it though, which is more mental than physical...

Sweden

This Swedish team is interesting, but somewhat depleted...the defense is nasty...Boqvist (CHI), Lundkvist (NYR), Sandin, (TOR), Brannstrom (VGK), Broberg (2019) might be the best top to bottom in the tournament...but Olle Eriksson Ek is going to have to keep games close for a forward group that looks like it leaves a little on the table talent wise compared to past years...Sweden seems like an under pick a lot of games, and might be worth an upset special here and there against a mid-range team...they could get picked off in this tournament...

Russia

Always a mysterious group, other than the fact that they almost always bring a squad of just 19 year olds at almost any cost...Russia is far from my territory and a lot of these names don't resonate with me...I know Alexeyev (WSH) on the backline can ball...and they're rarely short on gamebreaking talent: Kostin (StL), Kravtsov (NYR) and Kovalenko (COL) can bring the heat but the Russians have been playing a lot of rope-a-dope games in recent years...they're an under play more often than not...and like Russia in big spots, they tend to get folded under by structure...

Switzerland

The Swiss have been brilliant in hanging around at all levels of international play with their structured defense and heady play, but look out, now they're getting some gamebreakers that don't have to settle for 2-1 wins...Nando Eggenberger (best player not taken in 2018 in my opinion), Philipp Kurashev (CHI) and Valentin Nussbaumer (2019) could really open up some historically low scoring Swiss games at any point...their defense is not as smart as it has been in years past either, namely singling out Tim Berni (CBJ) and Nico Gross (NYR) as potential hazards for the typically careful Swiss...they're a stealthy threat as usual, but maybe for a different reason this year...

Potential MVP candidates: Jack Hughes (USA), Quinn Hughes (USA), Kaapo Kakko (FIN)
Gold: Finland
Silver: USA
Bronze: Canada

lol'd at LBL.

Both, meow. I don't even care if you can sauce it any more, I know that's out of style or whatever...but with RVH you have stick freedom, which you lose as a VH goalie because you gotta be all huddled up...if you're not gonna use it on the post, and you're not gonna protect your fiver with it on your push across, then what good is it...?

Well, the entire point of RVH is to free your hands up. VH goalies turn into gargoyles when they drop into it. RVH keeps your hands out and mobile, so the fact that Hart doesn't means he is lazy with it. It's there to do, just do it dude.

I don't have anything to add because having a second child and living in the south has severely dampened my ability to watch junior and college games. I do know Spencer Knight is the tits and Michael DiPietro is trash. Also, if you look up Finnish Goaltending in an encyclopedia, there is a smash montage of Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. Like, take Pinne, Kiprusoff, and Niklas Backstrom and smush them into one goalie and you have Luukkonen.
