Thought this guy was going to be a speedy scoring winger for a long time. Didn't pan out.

I really thought I had already mentioned him in this thread, which would have been gold...but alas...but yeah, I was a big fan of Chistov...he definitely could have made it in this league...

Frankly, he was a bit of the post 1980 American hockey hype machine casualty and never stood a chance of being what some wanted. The perennial non-champion GM (now in Nashville) traded him to the Rangers and neither team tangibly benefited.

He faded out and eventually no one cared.

When I was teaching in NYC in the '80s, one of my students told me she went out with Bobby Carpenter. :o

I really didn't know quite how to respond to that.

I always got him and Alexei Smirnov confused. Neither were the league for all that long (Smirnov for 52 games from 2002-04; Chistov for almost 200 games from 2002-07), but both were first round busts by the Ducks.

Smirnov? Yes, he's from Tver, which is also the hometown of Ilya Kovalchuk.

Cam Barker. Completely forgot this guy existed. Just signed with Ilves in Liiga. 3rd overall in the 2004 draft.

Was curious to see who else was in that 04 draft. Man what a terrible group, outside of the 3 Russians in the first round the only two of note are Franzen and Rinne.

I was a big Wojtek Wolski fan.

I also had higher hopes for Lauri Tukonen. A lot of the other guys I didn't really like too much...I did think that Petteri Nokelainen was going to craft himself into a long-term defensive center role in this league, but he only made 250 games...

Wolski was good until he got his brains scrambled, iirc. Recently terminated his contract in the K for some unknown reason despite putting up decent numbers.

how the hell did Cam Barker put up 40 in 68 games?

Also kinda surprising is that he also put up 40 pts in 55 in the KHL, which was the most points by a defenseman that season.

Wheeler and Krejci were also in this draft. After those two, it's a very sharp decline.

He put up 40 because he had the greatest captain of all time.

Almost they exact same way that Whitney got 60 points or whatever it was here actually...

Whitney's 59 doesn't seem as much as an anomaly as Barker's 40. He hit 38 and 40 early on (thanks Sid), but also had hockey's version of the anti-Cy Young where he went 2g-25a (including starting the season with no goals and 24 assists) in 35 games.

If Whit wasn't born with the ankles of a 90 year old man, it would have projected out to 63ish points over a full season with a less talented Oilers team.

That back door play converted over 80% of the time. It was damn near automatic.

Crosby should get a bigger piece of Whit's money than both his agent and the IRS...
