Robert Kron is a guy I remember.

Speaking of whom, where in the world is Robert Kron?

Funny you should ask....

Today, a mere four days from Christmas, we remember a guy who once donned the festive "Christmas" jersey of the NJD (the only good or cool thing about this god-forsaken garbage franchise), one Paul Ysebaert. Paul put up 149-187-336 over 532 NHL games with the Devils, Wings, Jets, Hawks, and Lightning. Paul's best season was 91-92 with the Wings, when he led the NHL in +/- at +44, and finished in the top 10 in Selke voting.

Paul's last name is preposterous, which is why Paul Ysebaert is a guy I remember.

I remember being excited about Brian Bonin because he won the Hobey Baker. There was zero reason to be excited about Brian Bonin.

No idea. I haven’t lived in Pittsburgh since before half of you whippersnappers were born.

to be honest - I come to this thread for the 80s/90s hockey card pictures. Most of my introduction to players comes from hockey cards and / or strat-o-matic hockey.

Hell to this day if I hear a player from that era, I think he's a 3 on defense but a 4 if he's on the PK.... oh and that guy is a AA penalty - so ya....

Players had a skate rating for killing penalties - ie they could kill time all by themselves if they had the puck.. you select a card and if the 1 to 20 number falls within the skate ranking, you kill some time on the PK - really good players could get a breakaway with like a 1 or something - though it was rare.

The card for Mario's 13 SH goal season, was skate 1 to 13... breakaway 1 to 4.... that was an insane card.

Ignatjev destroyed his shoulder and Serowik suffered a career ending concussion.
Jeff Serowik had a cannon of a shot but could not hit the net with it. Some nights, even hitting a soccer net might have been a bit of a challenge.

Serowik's career was ended by Peter Worrell with a cheap shot into the boards.

I may not remember much about Vikor Ignatjev, but I do remember Jeff Serowik.

Vaclav Nederost is a former Avs 1st round pick (14th overall in 2000). When the Avs came to Pittsburgh, Nedorost ended up scoring two points and ended up beating the Pens that night. I thought he was going to put up a ton of point after that game against the Pens, but that was not the case. He scored two points the rest of the season before being sent down to Hershey. His following season wasn't much better, scoring 9 pts in 42 games. He would finish his NHL career the following season playing for the Panthers, scoring 7 pts in 42 games, giving him .16 ppg, .21 ppg, and again .21 ppg respectively over his parts of three NHL seasons. He spent his next five seasons in the Extraliga and the following seven seasons bouncing between teams at the KHL. Looks like he's back in the Czech Republic playing in the 2nd tier 1.liga, the same league where Jagr will be playing.

There was a Andrej Nedorost who played for Columbus around the same time that Vaclav played for Colorado and Florida. They are not related.

I vaguely remember Andrej Nedorost, but I definitely remember Vaclav Nedorost.

Wow, great contribution. Vaclav Nedorost. He was part of that Czech resurgence in the early 2000's - he centered a line that contained Pavel Brendl at the 2000 or 2001 World Juniors that worked everyone...then I think he had a bunch of shoulder injuries and then that was it...

Overall number two pick by the Whalers, he put up 269 goals for four NHL teams. I saw Sylvain score his first NHL goal in 1983. I have no idea who won the game but still remember the gnarly smells of the Civic Arena.

Gnarly smells of near the troughs of urine and snot...or just gnarly smells of the building in general...?

Fun-ish fact: Sylvain Turgeon has a hockey card (it's 94-95 Pinnacle, if I recall correctly) that obviously has a picture of him, but in the background of the photo is a 6 or 7 year old Patrick Kane...

Legend has it that the site of the old Mellon Arena is haunted by the ghost of Josef Beranek’s career, which is perpetually in the midst of another fruitless five minute shift.

if it's a ghost then nobody should have to worry about contact being made, which could probably also be said when Beranek was taking a regular shift at the Igloo.
