Oh, when I used to be a rat, I could even get the refs to laugh at the **** talk I came up with...I don't think that's the issue...it's not about crude, it's about derogatory in a specific sense...
Ya know, I don't think I've ever heard a slur of that nature on the rink before as an official, other than the six-letter F-word...but that wasn't a big deal back when I was reffing more often...I'm trying to think about what I'd do if I heard the n-word or some such on the rink...I would probably need to go over to the scorer's table and figure it out and then file a report with the head of the league for them to handle supplemental discipline...I imagine I give a 10 and a game...but I've never been faced with that that I can recall...

I’m 100% for the hammer coming down on any slurs. There is no need for that. Just call a dude a clown or a joke or a bender or a donkey or a bum or a bad hockey player.

Antti Niemi claimed off waivers by Montreal. Given the caliber of player, this seems more appropriate here.

C word? That does that apply here or am I not thinking of the right one...?
I coached in a tournament where a player used the F-word (sexual orientation word) but not at anyone...he was coming to our bench and really said it to no one in particular and the ref tried to suspend him for three games on the spot. Naturally, that wasn't in the rules anywhere nor are officials permitted to suspend players on the ice. So I fought against it and settled on being tossed from that game. That was a good five years ago now I guess...
That said, just because you're on the rink doesn't mean that you should have free reign to use the n-word and this other stuff...you're just asking for trouble by allowing that. The F-word (four letter) is the most common word used on any hockey rink at any age, that's fine...the four letter c-word is not hateful, so that's fine...the n-word and the like, I think that's where the line is...those are specifically derogatory...
the "C" word I am referring to rhymes with punt. it didn't apply to the person the guy said it to (another dude, apparently) but it was said. as for the "four letter c-word" not being hateful, if we're indeed talking about the same one then I disagree, yes it is very hateful. imagine how you would feel if someone on the street said that to your wife, mother or daughter.

That's an inherently gender specific slur and in the context of a mens league hockey game I would view its use in the English/Australian tradition rather than in the Lisa Lampenilli way.
Meaning, I'd laugh it off but can understand why others might not.

in this case it was one guy saying it to another but we have recently had a guy say it to a female player as well. That's an inherently gender specific slur and in the context of a mens league hockey game I would view its use in the English/Australian tradition rather than in the Lisa Lampenilli way.

Well, yeah, that's **** up.
I'm not sure I'd be comfortable playing co-ed ice hockey. Was she a skater or a goalie? We had a female goalie in high school.

Yeah, same c-word...I have never viewed that as "hateful"...I don't include that in the same word as sp**, n-word, k-word, etc.
For me, as a player or as an official, I would draw the line "above" that word if I'm being honest...if because I'm on the internet, I'm required to pretend to be a great person or SJW, then fine...but if I'm being honest, I don't hold that word in that type of regard...I'd be just as upset if someone called my girlfriend or whatever the c-word as the b-word or whatever...I understand there's a degree difference of hostility, but my reaction would definitely not be any different...
EDIT: Ah, I see the "to a woman" comment...I've never talked any trash to a female player, so I don't know...

I think the choice of the c-word in an environment where the woman is probably in a healthy minority of those assembled puts it over the top for me.
If the male coach of a all-woman's team said it I'd care less. It would probably be a poor choice on his part, but I don't think it would have the same effect.

Calling a female player the c-word is a big no-no imo. I would be ok with a male calling a male it as long as no females were present.

Honestly, I've never really thought of it or understood the connotation to be gender-specific...

Any male player talking trash to a female player is about all you need to know about that guy.

A wise person once told me "Hockey gives dadholes a reason to be dadholes".
A no-check policy doesn't really stop some doofus from being a doofus.
My captain (a female) gets hit at least twice a game because people don't know how to control their bodies.

I get checked occasionally and sometimes it's me doing the checking. there are times when an opposing player is lined up and you just can't resist. as long as it's not a cheap shot, no big deal.
I'm a pretty clean player so I rarely get into dust-ups. I have occasionally had women on other teams try to get in the face of my male teammates. if I'm on the ice I'll usually try to get in between them telling the other player that if they keep going they'll be fighting me, not my male teammate. I don't ever want a male teammate put in a position where he's got to push a female opposing player away from him.
