Roundtable discussion for 5AF NHL Awards Ballots - RESULTS ARE IN...

Postby mikey » Sun Apr 19, 2015 10:47 am

Final thoughts:

- Hart Trophy was very biased against Ovechkin, but I wouldn't expect anything less here... Though I appreciate the John Tavares love...it will probably shake out Price-Ovechkin-Tavares in the real vote...then maybe Dubnyk and Getzlaf...I'd be surprised if Crosby got anything more than scant consideration, much less a strong 4th place finish that he got here...

- If Letang didn't miss games down the stretch, he probably would win the Norris...now I think Karlsson wins it, but Letang should still finish high...though the sample size is small so one or two votes can swing placement here in this thing, I wouldn't expect much love for Ryan Suter or Ryan McDonagh this year, particularly the latter, I would expect zero votes. Suter struggled for a lot of the early season, he might get some scant votes on reputation though (and ice time)...McDonagh has not been the Rangers best d-man this year certainly...

- Vezina looks good to me. I think that's how it shakes out top-3...

- Calder is anyone's guess, it depends on what you like...nice close vote there...

- Selke, who knows, my feeling is Toews will win it though...

- Byng, who cares really...

- I think Bob Hartley is going to win the Adams comfortably...but there are some good choices certainly...Barry Trotz getting Ovechkin to go down to block a couple shots this year is worthy of votes for sure...

- GM I find tough to say in a one-year stretch...I give Bob Murray (Ana) a lot of credit for the testicular fortitude to buy a new defense at the deadline...interesting for a first place team to do so much tinkering...we'll see if it works out...

- The AS teams came out pretty nicely...

I'll post my ballot there, though, you might as well just look at meow's twice...our ballots were close enough that you might feel as if we talked it over beforehand, but I can assure that we did not...

Id have probably put stone in as my top vote just for dragging the shockingly mediocre senators into the playoffs. Ignoring the last month id have probably gone gaudreau.

That's kind of the feeling I get from the actual voting members as well...might just be the case...

D: Letang, Karlsson, Subban
D: Giordano, Burns, Lindholm
LW: Benn, Ovechkin, D. Sedin
C: Crosby, Tavares, Seguin
RW: Voracek, Tarasenko, P. Kane

I feel like not a lot of people knew who the Flames GM was, or they figured that Bob Hartley blowing everything up really helped them. I think Treliving was a major part of their turnaround from last year.

And yes, I had Laviolette ahead of names like Trotz, etc. because of how poorly Nashville played last year, and how they played after the change.

I don't understand why you guys have Holtby as 3rd for the Vezina, but he isn't on your all-star teams. (mikey, meow)

Vezina vote I favor more wins and games played, as per the history of the award. Impact on a winning team.

Oh ya know who is not there on the GM list...how about Garth Snow from the New York Islanders...grabs a top pair of d-men before the season starts (!) without giving up a roster player and keeps them for seven years each. He drafted (Cizikas and Martin) and traded for (Clutterbuck) maybe the best fourth line in the league...Anders Lee (6th round, 2009), Brock Nelson (30th overall, 2010), Ryan Strome (5th overall, 2011) playing big roles...he signed a second line basically in Kulemin and Grabovski...fixed the starter position with Jaroslav Halak...he's done some good work...

I think Snow getting his shopping done early hurt him. It's a long season and I can't remember stuff that happens in October. Again, too many blows to the head.

I forgot about Hartley for the Adams. Du'oh

For me, all star selections can be given out to players with small stretches of great play - ex: Dubnyk. Holtby was consistent all year.
