My alma mater only had a club team and I always wondered how even that lasted. Was that that the status of UPS before that rich guy came along and amped things up?

PSU's club team was one of the best in the country for years and years (over a 24 year span they had 7 national championships and 9 runner ups). I think they were planning on making the jump to DI at some point, but Pegula may have accelerated things.

Yup. It's great to have another sport to root on PSU for. I obviously pull for them in basketball too, but, ya know.

TIL (well, yesterday IL) that Tony Granato is the head coach of the Wisconsin Badgers. Also, during play, his players are all standing in front of him and he stands on their bench... kinda weird:

There was a segment on Granato on NBC recently. He's finishing up his degree and will graduate with his senior players this Spring.

PSU hockey goes from being #1 in the nation to a bubble team struggling to get into the tourney. Been such a roller coaster year. Hopefully they pull out the W tonight against Minnesota to get to the B1G championship. Win that and there's no bubble watch.

Robert Morris taking on Canisius tonight in the AHA semifinals. They'll never be a college hockey power, but a fourth consecutive trip to the conference's final four is a pretty damn good streak. Winner of tonight's game will take on the winner of Army vs. Air Force in the championship game.

USCHO.com's AHA writers also combined to give RMU a "combo sweep" in end of the year awards. Both writers gave Brady Ferguson player of the year and Francis Marotte rookie of the year. One writer gave defenseman of the year to Eric Israel and the other gave coach of the year to Derek Schooley.

Ferguson's 21 goals are 8th in college hockey and his 55 points are 6th. He led the conference in goals, assists, and points. Israel's 26 points in 30 conference games were 12th in conference scoring and led all defensemen. After a rough three games to start the season Marotte supplanted senior Dalton Izyk and junior Andrew Pikul as RMU's starting goaltender. He went 16-7-3 in 27 games and his 2.08 GAA was 10th in D1 and his .933 SV% was tied for 2nd.

Regardless of what happens this weekend, it was another solid year for an RMU squad that featured only 5 seniors and should only be losing 1 top player.

Powered by a Brady Ferguson hat trick Bobby Mo ends Canisius' 17 game winning streak with a 6-2 victory and heads to the conference finals tomorrow against one of the inferior branches of the military.

Putting up a touchdown on Charlie Williams is a small miracle. His gaa this year is sub 2. Great college goalie.

Good luck tomorrow, Bobby Mo. Watching my Nitwits right now. They started great and got up 1-0, but are now down 1-2.

Pretty much best case scenario for Penn State... pretty much locks a spot in the tourney (many thought they were already in regardless of what happened last night), and play a team that you've dominated all year in the B1G finals. I fell asleep with about 5 minutes left in the first overtime and the goal woke me up. Stoked.

My first or second year at school they were 33-1 on the season..... the 1, sadly, was the national championship game, which gave rise to the saying "33 and the wrong 1". I was part of what I believe was the first 'JV' team around 94-95 when JoeBa was still the coach of the Icers. And because I lived there year-round and was a known commodity as a instructor at the rink, I got to to assist with his summer camps every now and again; you learn a lot in a hurry with a good coach in teach mode.
