Probably has something to do with being a bunch of rotten ass nuggets who think they're too good to play their old pals RMU in the Three Rivers Classic.

They hate us cause they ain't us.
I’ll also throw Penn State’s Denis Smirnov into this mix because he’s seventh in points nationally and the Big Ten might need a representative, but everyone hates Penn State because they shoot a bunch and haven’t played much of note. Doesn’t matter that they’ve destroyed almost everyone they’ve played. People hate the Nittany Lions behind their early success. I don’t think it’s fair but he probably won’t be there at the end of the year.

Also, the Nittany Lions added a big forward who will be available for play immediately:

Hm. Didn't realize we had a draft pick playing at PSU.

Yup, Pavlychev who has been playing alright for them this season. There are a few that probably bumped up their draft status by their play this year, but I'm not sure how the draft system works... @mikey or @meow, if someone like Peyton Jones who was waiting to hear his name in the 2016 NHL draft and it never happened, can he be drafted in 2017? Or how does that work? Similar to NFL where he's gone through declaring for the draft and can just get signed by anyone that thinks it's worth it?

Geez, what, do you go through thrice now and then you're out on the street...? So at 18 you're drafted, 19 you're drafted, 20 you're drafted and then at 21 you're a UFA for North Americans...? I think that's how it works...

When I was in school, if you went undrafted, and were 20 on September 15, you became a UFA. I think that is still the rule. So if your birthday lined up a certain way, you could be 20 and sign anywhere you wanted.

And do you have to officially declare for the draft or anything like that or once your turn a certain age you're automatically draft eligible?

18 year olds must declare. 19 year olds are automatically eligible.

Nah, meow, I think they wiped that rule in 2005...you were closer to being in the show than I was as a player, but I think they ditched that...though I do recall it being a thing up til 2004, but I think that's gone now...I don't think there's any opt-in...

Interesting. I know when Michigan was in Happy Valley there were reports of something like 11 different teams with scouts there to watch. Apparently Billy G. was in the house. It's interesting seeing teams that are packed with already drafted players like Minnesota and then teams like PSU with only one (well... now two).

After dropping a game last weekend, I was worried when PSU was down 2-1 in the third against a bad Michigan State team, but they rallied late and picked up the W. With 1-3 all losing to unranked teams this weekend, PSU might just jump to #1 in the polls. That'd be incredible.

I dont follow college hockey. Is that a big deal now since i presume they are in the same conference as michigan state and are in conference play? Does college hockey work out the way football and basketball work with those rankings becoming relevant late in the season?

It's not conference play yet (or rather, I don't believe true "conference play" exists as it does in CFB and basketball), I don't think, unless Arizona State got picked up by the B1G (OSU went 1-0-1 against them this weekend).

The biggest reason the rankings are important is the playoff tournament. It's a similar set up to basketball in that the champs of each conference get in, but then one of the polls determine the at large teams (I think the RPI rankings are the ones that count, which PSU is actually at #1 currently). The USCHO rankings seem to carry more weight though as they are what many consider to be the "actual" rankings.I dont follow college hockey. Thats interesting. Makes sense and is pretty awesome for such a young program. My relationship with college hockey is to wait for the tournament and them bet on nd to win it all.

Well PSU has hit a swoon here losing 5 in a row before beating the Badgers last night. Need to keep their heads above water to avoid going from #1 to out of the playoff.
Conversely my Friars stumbled out of the gate in Hockey East but have now won 9 straight conference games after sweeping a home and home with UConn.
The two teams sit side by side at #10 abd #11 and would be in if the tourney started today. Will be an interesting next few weeks.

PSU has certainly hit a rough patch... hopefully they can sweep the badgers and get back on track.
