I'm still hesitant to get excited about this team as they haven't bitten into the meat of their schedule just yet, but it's really hard not to smile when I see those rankings.

Score... got the unused company tickets for tomorrow's game vs. Michigan. Excited to see what this team does against a real team.

I watched it (it was on ESPNU)... was so good. I hate Michigan, so it was even better to see them go down hard.

I only caught part of the last period, but they are a fun team to watch. Should be a good game tomorrow.

Destroyed Michigan, jump up to #3 in the nation... no first place votes though. I'm finding myself getting sucked in to thinking this might be a really good team.

Are these games televised on local TV in central PA?

Nope... you can catch a game every so often on B1G network, but that's about it.

ESPN has also been showing some of the games. The Thursday night game against Michigan was on ESPN or ESPNU.

Yeah, but that's much more rare. That was to cover the opening of B1G hockey.ESPN has also been showing some of the games. The Thursday night game against Michigan was on ESPN or ESPNU.

PSU hockey had the weekend off, and somehow managed to pick up 4 first place votes. They remain at #3 (program's highest ranking) and now have their first #1 votes in program history.

Why does a sport that plays more than a handful of games need voting?

The playoffs are very similar to NCAA basketball tourney in that the winners of each conference get in and then there are at large bids. The at large bids are awarded based off rankings. The rankings need to be made with some subjectivity due to strength of schedules and whatnot...Why does a sport that plays more than a handful of games need voting?
If every team played every other team in the NCAA, I'd agree that there's no need for voting.

Similar opponents for teams that don't play each other is a huge factor.
PSU and OSU don't play
PSU beats Miami 6-1
OSU beats Miami 1-0
PSU>OSU ranking-wise

Is this at least done mathematically in the end or is it eyetest bullshit like CFB?

CFB is mathematical, but they say "**** that because rating$"
MHKY is mathematical and they say "whatevs, we'll have Union, UMass-Lowell, Princeton and Alaska-Fairbanks in the frozen four. Hold my beer."

I'm fairly new to this whole NCAA hockey thing but the at large bids do seem to go to those "classic" hockey schools.

I was confused for a second because #14 is Sucese and I've never hear of this Demeester kid... he's a part of the club team at PSU. I know it said that in the article, but I was so confused why PSU was playing PSU Altoona.
In any case, he let it slide at first, and then when it was clear what the opponent was doing, he reported it. Good on him. I'm sure the language out on the ice isn't exactly the same thing you'd find in church, so it could be tough to tell what's a targeted attack and what's just typical language.

Yup... I'm not sure if it's a matter of not being able to schedule anyone over the break or if that's just how it works.
