you'd think for an original 6 franchise, you'd have better candidates to choose from for number retiring

Confirmed today. Simon signed a 2-year contract.

https://www.hcsparta.cz/clanek.asp?id=D ... anem-15043

Interestingly, Simon said that Penguins offered him a try-out contract this summer...
Another interview. Before everything fades behind the paywall:

After a conflict with his teammate Filip Hronek in the national team, he left the World Championship in Finland. Dominik Simon has not yet commented on the events. Only now, when he returns home to Sparta from the NHL.

"I missed Sparta, I feel inner peace about the decision," says Dominik Simon in an interview with iDNES Premium.

Q: But you could still fight for a spot in Pittsburgh.

A: You're right, in seven years I've built up a position and a name in the NHL, I told myself I didn't want to leave yet. I even got a contract offer from another club, not just a tryout. But I didn't react quickly enough because I needed time to think about what I wanted to do. And now I'm glad it happened, because as time went on I made sure that what I wanted most was to be at home.

For NHL finance nerds:

An interesting article about new payment scheme NHL will have to pay for Euro players.

"Executive summary":

- starting 2026, NHL will pay $315K for every Euro-trained player signed by the NHL (until 2026 it will be $285K). The money will be distributed to clubs where each particular player spent the last 4 seasons.
- 1st round draft picks will cost NHL $35K, later rounds $20K, regardless of whether the player would be signed. Both values will be raised by $5K in 2026. The money again goes to teams from the last 4 seasons.
- all IIHF member countries except for Canada, US, and , importantly, Russia( :thumb: ) will be paid out of yet to be determined sump-sum end-of-season amount proportionately based on the number of players from each particular country who had at least 30 games played in that season.

Interestingly, $0 will go to Slovakia for Slafkovsky...
