Yeah, Strome is younger, much cheaper, offers roster flexibility (Strome plays C/RW), Strome is a RHS center to boot...and then like meow hinted, Eberle wanted out and the Oilers had to start removing the losers...a soft, small, one-way winger who had a brutal playoffs...they might have been able to get more for him somewhere else, but they obviously thought they could rekindle the fire that made Strome look like a 2C in his second year or whatever good season he had...It's not amazing, but there are some factors to it that make it justifiable for Edmonton. I think they knew they were giving up the better pure talent in the deal, but there are more factors than that, of course...
Age, contract.... ???
They really ought to have come away with a d-man in that deal...but that's easy to say after the fact. They figured Draisaitl would be a wing for McDavid, so that means they didn't need Eberle so much and needed a 3C...obviously, the whole boat hasn't been so great this year...much of which relies in net too...

But don't worry, Talbot said they will make the playoffs.

I mean, in all honesty, I knew they look pretty far down the standings and all...but they just need like a solid 17 or 18-game winning streak and they're right in it...

They only have to jump 5 teams. Totally doable.

The hall trade is much worse. Lesson for you kids who want to be GM someday. Your team needs are important, yes. But being a knowing loser in a trade for the purpose of balancing your lineup is not the right way to go.

I remember thinking at the time that they really did need that D piece, but giving up Hall for it? Yeesh.

My thoughts haven't changed from 18 months ago...
I know Hall is a top 5 LW in the game and Larsson is only probably a really good #2 d-man...I just don't think this is as big of a theft as people are making it out to be. Both teams fill a huge need. The Devils add speed and skill they don't have. The Oilers add a calming, minute-munching and all-around extremely competent d-man to their group. You could argue that the Oilers could get more value back elsewhere, but would they fill a need so directly with such a big piece? I have my doubts on that...

Jagr's garage league experience, part 2:
Today, Jagr's Kladno LOST 2:1 (away game). Jagr with the assist and sizable TOI. Sold-out area - 3,000 people.
Kladno is still 3rd, but now only 3 point up (in a 3-point system) on teams 4-6. Five games to go in the regular season.
Some criticism of Jagr is starting to brew over his role with the team - he uses private transportation to the away games (maybe understandable, sitting on a bus for over 3 hours may not be the best treatment for his ailing knee), but also has his personal private locker room apart from his team...

I guess look at it this way. Larsson is basically who they thought he was. And hall, while possibly exceeding expectations, is still in the vicinity of who they thought he was. So would they make that trade again? No, not likely. So if 2 players pan out how you expect, and you wouldn't repeat the trade if given the chance, then it's hard to justify the trade both in retrospect and at the time.My thoughts haven't changed from 18 months ago...

Now...I get it. The premise is that there was some combination of rebuilding around mcdavid and thinking they were closer than they really are going on here, so it's not that simple. But in some ways it is. One guy is too 5 at his position. The other guy is top 50. That calculus, imo, is never acceptable. There is a better offer. For a guy like hall, you wait for it.

Burrows was probably going to get two games, but then he stated that he kneed Hall because he was trying to free his hand.

I think that some of Edmonton's moves were more to get the "bad" element out of the locker room than about them being hockey deals. It was obvious that something was rotten in Denmark. "Bad" potentially meaning just lazy or big ego, or not listening, country club thinkers, that sort of thing. They tossed out Hall and Yakupov. Then the following summer gave away Eberle. You can even add Schultz to that list. They moved out some guys for very little return.

Oh it was known. But the flipping gm can’t be like, “let’s burn this mother down” in a statement when your team is 3 points out.

Rangers are a mess. They traded a 2nd and a 3rd for Brendan Smith, gave him a four year, $17.4 million contract after last season, and waived him today.
