Hockey Randomness

Postby Tomas » Fri May 11, 2018 11:49 am

I thought never having to move out is the whole point of building a house.
I think this is one of those "Europe vs. US" difference. Especially in careers like a heart surgeon, the expectation is that one will most likely not stay in one place for too long. I myself have one of the most stable careers, but after spending 18 years with one employer, I notice that well over 50% of people I started with moved far, far away. Plus even we are on a market for a new house, because we want to move to a top school district in the area...

One real estate agent told me that the average time an American family will spend in one house is less than 7 years...

Don't you live in the midwest? That's why. That's definitely why.

I've never stayed in one longer than three years, and that's renting or buying. Really hoping to break that record here soon.

I know so many people who bought their first house, calling it their "starter home", knowing full well that they did not want to be there more than five years. To me, that's absurd, and a huge roll of the dice financially.

Well, we just did that, technically. We anticipate living here 5-8 years before moving to Europe. We're basically waiting for the dog to die before pulling up stakes. Would really like to make it to 5 years at least, for my own sanity. We have one year in and my wife is starting a 3 year doctorate program so it's highly likely we'll hit it.

Of my cohort of nine faculty that started with me here in July 2007, there are only three of us still left. One of those people is in her late 60s and will be retiring soon. All but one moved far, far away.

My dog is at 90% life expectancy. I'm not dragging her over to Europe. She doesn't travel well and it wouldn't be fair to her.

I can’t imagine someone coming to America and setting up shop in a flyover state. It’s like goIng to Ruth’s Chris and ordering baked chicken or something.

I actually have a short stand-up routine prepared in my head in case I am ever called for an "open-mike". On exactly the same topic. I don't think I'll ever use the routine, but in case I do, I'm definitely going to steal the Ruth's Chris joke!

Also, EVERY speech of any of my colleagues - American or foreign - about their "Fayetteville" experience has the sentence "and this place is actually better than what we thought originally." I forbid my departmental friends to ever use this sentence when we recruit for new positions.

Also, if you ever talk to any person from NW Arkansas, you can bet that "and Fayetteville is No. 5 best place to live in the USA according to US News and World Report ranking, 5-years in a row" will be uttered with 99.99% certainty.

Also, you, too, are dead to me. :P

Wonder if Mike Babcock is chewing nails over the Dubas hiring?
Hey Mike, stop by my office after practice. I have some suggestions on your handling of Auston's TOI

Nashville not asking Hartnell to come back.

He’s a guy that deserves to retire on someone else’s schedule. This is a good day.

McKenzie on TSN 1050 just said everyone in Carolina is available except Aho.
This is insane to me.

Well, that doesn't mean that they're all being actively shopped...but you get a complete overhaul of an organization and things like this happen...you want your people in there...

It doesn't, but their owner is still insane if Aho is truly the only untouchable on that team.

I’m warming to their new owner. He’s going against the grain, which is mainly going against the dinosaurs, which is usually good by me, which is why I’m warming to him.

Random trivia: "Aho" (あほう) in the Kansai dialect of Japanese means "idiot." It's a pretty strong "idiot" too. Think Red Forman on That 70s Show calling someone a dumbass.

46% of Winnipeg's roster is American. That is an incredibly high number in its own right, and they are by far the most American team left in the playoffs. Next closest is Washington at 24%, about half of that.
