Yeah...I can't imagine being so unbalanced...

It's really bad when the voices disagree.

Informal survey:

Rank these recent players by who was the best (use your judgment on the word "best"):
- Zdeno Chara
- Duncan Keith
- Martin St. Louis

Then rank these 90s players by who was the best...
- Sergei Fedorov
- Brian Leetch
- Eric Lindros

Just curious as to what the feeling is...

Chara and Fedorov are the obvious answers, no? I have a hatred for Chara that taints my opinion there, but I couldn’t put Leetch or Lindros above Fedorov. He was an absolute force out there for such a long time (I know #2 played a while).

Let me say that I don't find there to be an "obvious" answer to this...that's why I'm curious as to the response...

Lindros could take a game over and ruin your weekend. He’s tops for me. Then Federov. Then Leetch - who is docked points for looking like an accountant.

I dunno...Chara makes everyone feel a few inches taller out there. And he’s also just good. But St Louis could create from nothing. I’d probably give the edge to Chara. Keith had that cup run, but I’m not feeling him over the long haul the same way.

Lindros, Fedorov, Leetch
St. Louis, Chara, Keith ... maybe. I don't like Chara, so ...

Fedorov was my kind of player, but Lindros truly was a monster.

I can’t give the honor of naming a player “best” when he cannot play the game with his head up.

Unless the award is “Best at taking on ice naps”

I assume the premise here is that we’re talking about each player in their prime condition. Lindros playing loose with his brain matter would have an impact in <1% of those games.

I guess we need more context to see if hypothetical durability matters.

Chara's lack of technical skills isn't a bother to the respondents? If you were making a list of the top-X defensemen of all time, he would be on it...but he would be among the least technically skilled certainly...hands, passing, skating, puck rushing...

I was basing my rankings on overall efficacy, and team contribution. That’s not congruent with talent in Chara’s case.

I assumed everyone would have said Chara in my initial post due to the praise he seems to receive (not on here). MSL would have been my actual choice.
