According to this guy, the cap keeps teams from being competitive. :face:

Also, apparently the problem isn't the $11M+ salaries, it is the cap.

the existence of the cap is necessary. but it would be nice if it was a little more nuanced where a homegrown guy isn't going to cost you the same as a UFA. so sure...nobody made them get tavares, but they didn't expect marner to both blow up and be a little bit chode-ish with his contract demands. i don't think this is a "you made your bed, now lay in it" thing. it highlights a deficiency in the system, imo.

I think that the cap is doing exactly what it is supposed to do... prevent one team from signing all of the (in this case) $11M guys while other teams struggle. The point of the cap is to prevent one of the teams from doing what Toronto is trying to do. The cap is working to keep all of the teams competitive.

All agents say that the cap(s) should be destroyed...that's the company line. It's nothing new under the sun.

The players have cannibalized their own middle class with these ballooned RFA deals...not saying don't get yours if you're good (a la Marner...he's one of the best players in the league) but it really puts a strain on - say - Marcus Pettersson, for instance...

The cap is working and necessary. You could "solve" this "problem" by extending the entry-level system beyond its current format, but that would come at a major, major cost to the owners and it's just not the right time to be doing that...all you can really legitimately hope for (probably) is that this pinata that they're swinging at keeps spitting out money...

You could cap raises. No more than 50%, or 100% (double your $).

With bonuses, Jack Hughes' contract right now is $3,775,000/yr. His next would be capped at either 50% increase ($5,662,500) or 100% increase ($7,550,000). That is still decent money coming out of an ELC. You could also make second contracts something like a minimum of 2 years. 3 for ELC + 2 for 2ndC, 5 years at relatively affordable prices for a young star.

Yeah, that's an extension of the entry level system and it promotes heavy bonus structure...fluff money that may make it tough for some teams to get elc players into their lineups in the first place...may low key hurt B prospects and lower...

Konecny re upped at 6years x 5.5 mill.

I don’t like watching this shitbird play, so I’m not thrilled but he’s also the type of loser personality that keeps the Flyers in mediocreville

i think you have voracek and giroux who still sleep in footy pajamas and never miss an episode of paw patrol. then you give them a guy like konecny who has a ridiculous amount of talent, but decides to prioritize pissing people off to an unhealthy degree instead. all of this amounts to an immature loser stew.

...but it's still a favorable contract - especially combined with provorov. and if that crew ever decides to grow up, they're gonna be filthy.

Boeser agrees to three-year, $17.625 million contract with Canucks. $5.875 AAV, huge bargain. Brock will still be a RFA when the contract expires.

Good point, he makes $7.5 million in the final year. So wouldn't the qualifying offer be $8.25 million?

It is a sliding scale. If a guy makes <$660K it is a 10% raise. Up to $999,999 is a 5% raise (QO $1M max). $1M+ is no raise. Based on the last year salary, not an average or the cap hit, bonuses also do not count, just the actual salary.

The NHL's video on new/updated rules for the upcoming season:

TL;DW:

Video Review:
  • Can be used to confirm or reduce a major penalty to a minor
  • Will only be used to review a penalty (major, match, double-minor high stick)
  • Will not be used to add or increase a penalty
Coach's Challenge:
  • First unsuccessful challenge = minor penalty
  • Second unsuccessful challenge = double-minor penalty
Helmets:
  • If your helmet comes off during play, the player will be assessed a minor penalty if he does not either exit or retrieve and replace his helmet within a reasonable period of time (discretion of the official). player may be allowed to complete the play if they're on the puck. Note: This one could get ugly
  • A player who removes another player's helmet will receive a roughing penalty
  • Any time the attacking team is responsible for the puck going out of play, the resulting face-off will take place in the zone where the puck was shot from
Line Changes/Face-Offs:
  • No line change for defensive team, when goalie freezes a puck shot from outside the center red line, or when a defensive skater (not a goalie) causes a stoppage by accidentally dislodging the net
The offensive team chooses the face-off location in these scenarios:
  • following an icing
  • following a goalie stoppage on the puck being shot from outside red line
  • following a defensive skater dislodging the net
  • first face-off to start power play
I can see the video review changes hampering the flow of the game, so hopefully it doesn't get to where the NFL is (barely watchable). I do like the face-off changes.

Good enough, I guess...clock the reviews. 60 seconds from screen on, if it's obvious, correct it...if not, game on...

Helmet rules have come a long way...last player wasn't wearing one just 20 years ago. Joe Thornton played against a helmetless player, now, you can't even take warm ups without one...

Maybe this is the year that a puck over the glass penalty costs a team the cup and they finally fix this rule.

Well, officials are going to be much more inclined to call majors and double-minors now given that they can just reduce it via review later. Hopefully it doesn't slow down the game too much.

Byfuglien contemplating retirement.

Would free up $7.6 million the Jets could then use to pay Patrik Laine for the two dozen games he bothers to show up each season,

Mistakes usually do cost teams wins.
