it is just painful watching the Oilers suck night after night. WTF happened to last year's team that was a must-watch every time they hit the ice?

I haven't been able to watch many Oil games this year, but I have two quick thoughts on why their season is basically over.

They aren't getting as good of goaltending as they did last season.
They are painfully slow. Outside of McDavid, no one on that team has any foot speed.

As someone that watches the Oilers a fair bit, that's about right. Talbot the workhorse has not been strong. And they didn't really have an NHL guy behind him, which they're trying to remedy. Sekera being hurt for most of the season really frazzled their defense. And yeah, Maroon, Draisaitl, Nuge, Lucic, Strome, Cammalleri, Letestu, Kassassin...these guys aren't fast. All average skaters at best. So you have average skating forwards, a defense that isn't particularly skilled and lacks a #1 and goaltenders who aren't really getting it done nor are they great puck players...you're really just Montreal right now, but with worse goaltending and a better McDavid. So a lot of weight is on 97 and like we've seen in this league, you can shut anyone down if he's on an island...McDavid has a point on 41% of this team's goals, he needs help...fast...

So they went from a bad "skilled" team to a bad unskilled team?

It's not that they're unskilled at forward...they weren't skilled on defense last year either. They got a borderline Vezina performance from Talbot last year, but not at all this year...they still have some work to do, the worst thing you can do - in my opinion - is to give the players a reprieve and give the GM a reprieve and fire McLellan. The coach is not the problem there for my money...I think Chiarelli or a player ought to go before they dump that coach. That's a good, experienced coach, he's adaptable, he's smart, he gets a lot from his players...I hope they don't scapegoat him, even though that's the easy play, it's not the right one in my eyes...but I'm not in the room there either...

funny sound bite, but by any account i've heard, winnepeg is still a hell hole. i'm sure it is nice to have unlimited wealth and a fun job, though. he's correct about that.

Given the wealth and the job I would take Winnipeg over San Jose.

It seems mean to trade anyone to the Coyotes.
