That Buffalo-Ottawa deal sucks for Buffalo the more I think about it. Get an over-the-hill center and an unproven goalie for a first round pick in a stocked draft. Why?

If you believe in Lehner, like I do, he's worth a late 1. Legwand is just a booby prize. But, ya know, meow, I'm not finding this draft to be all that stacked. Once you get below 13 or so, it's pretty average in my opinion...I feel like this same formula gets played out every year...

12 months out: "This is the best draft ever, at least since '03"
12 weeks out "There's about 35-75 1st round caliber players here, 11/12 franchise players"
12 minutes out "Meh, it's top heavy, but that's about it"
12 years after "Turned out to be pretty much average"

Buffalo is trying to kickstart this thing, good for them...for better or for worse...

Agreed, but we are in the "Meh, it's top heavy, but that's about it" phase and a mid-level first gets you Robin Lehner and the ghost of David Legwand? If the rest of today's move follow suit, then I don't hate it, but it has the potential to be a stinky lose for the Sabres.

Seems like they got a goalie for a first and took on a vet to do so. He doesnt hurt them. They functionally have limitless money and a young team. This wont hurt their cap.

Cam Talbot is gonna get two 2nd rounders probably...I'd rather give the 1st for Lehner...if that's the scale we're working on...but we'll see how it goes...

Kevin Bieksa sucks, so let's see what San Jose gives up for him...as we'll start to see the market get set here...

Taking talbot to be a number 1 at all seems crazy.

I like Talbot over Lehner, in the long run, because Talbot plays a more controlled game. Quieter, more calculated, anticipating, thinking. Lehner wants to throw his huge frame around and block pucks and damn where the rebounds go, he'll hit reset and throwing himself in front of that one too.

Wait, didn't Fisher get a deal that's almost right on par with what he would have got if he only took two years...?
I honestly just don't understand that comment...

Who do you think would've been equal value at goalie for that pick?

Yeah, I think the Fisher deal and Toffoli deal were both right in line with how they went in the game. Ben Chiarot too...

That's tough because you have to look at who is really available goalie-wise, which I do not know.

That is an odd salary structure. I do not recall seeing one like that before. 2 years with a 50% raise in year 2. Slight increases sure... but not 50%.

LA is in some cap trouble, so I think they worked out a, "here is the total, but year one is much lower than year two."

The structure is so that you're basing the next contract off of the $3.9 million QO that he is due.

The cap would be unaffected by the pay each year...
