Obviously, Bettman has been terrific for the league...

Perfect? 'course not. But I never understand the grief he gets it...even when I ask people...

Eh, without the salary cap that came out of the lost season, the Pens would have been long gone.

How the players' union escapes blame in this is very curious...especially that second go-around, that was just about 100% on the players...

The league still employs Colin Campbell - unless you want to blame the owners for that.

Commissioners don’t control lockouts. The players and owners do.

Bettman is neither good nor bad. He’s a reflection of the owners, and that’s all.

And expansion is still dumb. It doesn’t seem that way at the moment because of the influx of talent. But that’s not a guaranteed trend. We could have a real mess of a league in a few years.

There's more talent than the league wants...so that's why stylistic things are necessary to control the flow of what talent is wanted. If you have bad rules/bad style, you'll attract different types of players...make the league seem less talented (in the way that I know you want it to be talented)...

Grandstanding dadhole. IMO.

Regarding Bettman. It's typically this exchange.

"Buttman sucks!"

"Why do you think he's doing a poor job as commissioner?"

"He just sucks! He favors the (insert team here) and is biased against others!"

I had almost that exact exchange with a friend of mine who claimed I didn't know hockey because he was a better player than me (he was a ****** goalie...a backup goalie on a club team...yes, he is better than me...but so are most players haha)...he said "Bettman sucks" and I just said "oh, why does he suck? Like, what does he do wrong?" and I'll never forget the stare and the awkward silence. And then he just brushed it off...and went "ya know, mikey, I'm just not going to go there."

I just said, "I don't blame you" and that was that...no one seems to have an answer for it...people just love to complain to complain...which this post is not excluded from...

He represents the owners, but people seem to think that he has no say in any of the matters, which is simply false. He’s not entirely to blame for the lockouts (3 in total), but since he’s the face of the beast, he’ll get **** for it from me. He has also been heavily in favor of franchises in markets that simply can’t support it, as well as all of this expansion nonsense.

That last bit is my biggest problem with him. The existence of the Coyotes and to a lesser but still irritable extent the Panthers. Bungling the TV deals as well. From having to watch hockey on the Outdoor Life Network to being locked into NBC for 10 years, yuck.

But overall he's a net improvement over the trajectory the league was on so I can't bang the drum too loudly. I wouldn't mind a changing of the guard to get some fresh ideas in there, I was disappointed when he was renewed for this reason.

He is an employee of the owners. He has about as much influence as you do over your boss.

This is common sense stuff. He runs the business on their behalf. For small issues, he generally does what he wants. For large initiatives like expansion and lockouts, he is funneling directives from his bosses.

It’s not a real business model to put your money in someone else’s hands. The owners are absolutely in charge of big boy decisions.

Go back and re-read my initial post, because nowhere did I state that he was the sole person in charge. He has much more influence and power than you assume he does, a fact that can be easily verified by a simple Google search.

Fleury does not have a concussion

Bettman is good at what he does

Clint Malarchuk is a wild story
