After today's unexpected loss to Germany (3:2 with the go-ahead goal 33 seconds before the end of regulation), USA in danger of not making the QFs stage. They have to get at least one 1pt (OT loss or better) in the last game against Slovakia to qualify.

US - Germany goals here:

That was a bad loss. I still have confidence in a win against slovakia...though i shouldnt given their lackluster play so far. A child should not be your best player.

Pretty much. You can take the player out of the Nhl, but you can't take the Nhl out of the player.

So it looks like that the Czech Republic vs. USA quarterfinal game will start on Thursday at 8:15 AM CT. I hope it will be on NBCSN. But, just in case:

US just one win from the "podium finish" after beating the Czech Republic 2:1 (SO) in the quarterfinals.
Matthews with the regulation US goal and the only SO goal scored.

I disagree. This is a single elimination tournament, which has:
A) a given schedule of play (e.g. the second QF in the same arena will be played less than 2 hours after the completion of the US-CZE QF)
B) by design, new opponent for every game. Especially since there will be ~24 hours between semifinals and finals/3rd place games, you cannot put teams playing, say, 3-4OTs against fresh teams from the other SF less than 24 hours after completing the games.

SO system is the only way these tournaments can realistically be decided.

Personally, I don't enjoy sudden death system even in the NHL. I view hockey strictly as entertainment, and I prefer my entertainment to have a reasonably predictable end time.

I'd be down with the NHL adopting that rule.

Technically they weren't eliminated, because they'll still play the bronze medal game.

Incidentally, since Ovechkin joined the team, Russia went 0 for 23 on powerplays, and AO himself has only 2 points (1+1) in five games.
