The more I think about this, the angrier I get. That an expansion team can just take a player that you've developed in your own system irritates the hell out of me.

What is the alternative?

I mean, a large chunk of the players that they have to select from would have been on or teetering near waivers anyhow...

A good poster on HF put together the unprotected list for the 2000 NHL Draft:

http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/showt ... ?t=1459435

Pittsburgh:
Pittsburgh
Forwards - Jan Alinc, Josef Beranek, Dennis Bonvie, Rob Brown, Tom Chorske, Pat Falloon, Mikhail Kazakevich, Jiri Kucera, Stephen Leach, Ian Moran, Timo Keikkula, Mika Valila, Tyler Wright, Boris Zelenko
Defensemen - Stefan Bergqvist, Jonas Andersson-Junkka, Peter Popovic, John Slaney, Dan Trebil
Goalies- Tyler Moss, Peter Skudra, Ron Tugnutt
Of that, we lost Tyler Wright and Andersson-Junkka...

Don't add another team to an already saturated league.

So, if the league was not saturated...how would the team get players...?

Ignoring that Terry Sawchuk, Glenn Hall and Andy Bathgate were taken in the twilight of their careers...how about Bernie Parent as a 22 year old...? Not a bad get.

They wouldn't be able to fill up on the draft or through free agency, but I'd prefer to see them forced to negotiate for certain players that they want to steal from other teams.

Negotiate how and with what? Not trying to be a sticky wicket, just trying to figure out what they're supposed to do. They're allowed to pick, in theory, from fourth liners and bottom pair d-men...which is as nice as the NHL has ever been to a new team...I guess that's what half a billion gets you...

How about this: they have to provide a list of 3 players, and the team they're snatching the player from gets to decide which of the 3 they can have? I'm just grumpy over this, because I think Las Vegas getting an NHL team is ludicrous.

Is it possible that Murray would still be considered exempt as a two year player going into the expansion draft? He has only played 13 regular season games so far and since the limit seems to be 70 games, then he could play up to 56 regular season games next season. Unless Fleury gets hurt or flat out stinks, Murray will most likely play less than half of the regular season games next season at the most.

The rules don't make it clear though if playoff games are counted along with regular season games towards the limit. If they are,
then the max number of games he could play in next year including the playoffs would be 35. @mikey, do you know if playoff games are counted?

It says second year pro, not NHLer, so I'm guessing he's not going to be exempt. I haven't gone through this with a fine tooth comb. But I would imagine that it means all NHL games.

The NHL has a 'gambling monitor' now, a position I assume that is there to placate whatever folks think pro sports can't happen in a gambling legal system. I can only imagine that position has a heave workload *yawn*.

I'm not believing any name until it's officially announced. How many team names have been "leaked" now?

Also, a knight in the desert makes zero sense. Can you imagine all the sand that would get in your armor?

I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere.

I prefer Dessert Nights

Expansion teams tend to slowly crawl their way to legitimacy. I wonder what the difference in maturation time would be if they couldn't build through the expansion draft. I suppose it's probably significant, but they seem fairly screwed for years to come either way.
