we could also make a financial argument that RFA players get boned in terms of compensation since their other point of leverage doesn't get used. but besides that - chaos. that's all. entertain us

Hockey is behind in everything. The good Canadian boy network is a giant sandbag on progress. The NBA is a hoot (other than the player empowerment crisis). NHL is stuffy, inaccessible and increasingly boring. And it’s at odds with the new culture of players like Eichel who don’t feel allegiances to outdated frameworks.

UFA-aged union members aren't going to cut into the earnings that they waited for to give RFAs a bigger piece of the pie now...

The NHL went through a phase of this anyhow and it didn't work...like Rostislav Olesz...it ended up hurting player development...

Offer sheets happen (Aho, recently, among others), they're expensive, but they happen every once in a while...but the NHL's most recent big rule change was the extra year for "homegrown" players, effectively, meaning that they're incentivizing players to remain where they were drafted to avoid NBA ****show, dog****, garbage, ****** loser, pathetic league stuff...because that league is for people who eat their own ah-hole every single second...

Steph Curry makes more than the Sabres roster

Internet shouldn’t exist. We shouldn’t be communicating like this (from Reddit):

“Mind boggling to me that Seattle picked Tanev over ZAR already, but this contract makes it even worse. Seattle could’ve came away with a 26yo elite defensive forward that could’ve easily been in their middle-6 for several years.“

Flyers fan, btw

Elite. Because one kid, somewhere, on twitter, gave him a little blue box with a number around it...

I never root against our players, but I hope that he's a 0 in that same box this year but plays exactly the same way...

I just went and look at some proprietary numbers by an "advanced" stat company that I have access to for a second...in all - and I mean all - of the statistics that I would consider being some measure of defensive ability he was almost comically average in almost all of them, slightly below in others...so who knows how that perfect score came about...

Imagine thinking ZAR is a 2nd line wing on Seattle.

Scratch that. He might be.

ZAR is not a needle mover in any way, shape, or form. When he does manage to dress, he is always just kind of "there".

He could be a lot better. He chooses not to be. He has a big body and can actually wreck guys if he was more into it. Also, I swear I saw him skate hard once. Once. I didn’t imagine it. He can do it. Big ole Ivy League brain doesn’t like trying when there’s no transactional reward.

I think, collectively, this board is a touch hard on ZAR. I’ve never questioned his lack of effort. Maybe there is still a bit of “if you play on X line, you need to do this and this.”?

I don’t know. He’s a fine player.

He's fine, just a little soft, IMO. He's certainly not overpaid.

You see. This is what I’m talking about. He’s not soft. I’ve never seen him shy away from contact. He most certainly takes hits to make plays.

He doesn't shy away from hits, but he gets pushed off the puck far too easily. That's what I meant.

I think that's just being not a good player...I think he is the hardest hitter on the team, right...?

I haven’t noticed him being easily knocked off pucks. Either way, that’s not being soft.

To close this whole thing, $1.725 mil a year for a player like this is more than fair.

Why doesn’t he hit more? I’m with you. He plays a physical game (in that he’s not shy like you say) but doesn’t understand the potential impact he could have as a banger.

Is it not how he pictures himself or is it just really hard to hit guys unless you’re a Martin/Wilson mutant or a psychopath like Tanev?
