One day during pickup last week someone who works at the rink in asked me to join their beer league team. I figured why not, I wouldn’t want to do it when the weather is warmer but I have nothing better to do in the winter

first game was this week at 1130pm which is the latest I’ve ever played hockey (never played after midnight before). Also I didn’t plan my dinner/alcohol intake beforehand well and felt like I had to throw up for most of the game

with 30 seconds left I got a breakaway with a chance to win the game and got denied. We lost in OT. Didn’t get into bed until 1:30 on a weeknight. Fuggggg

Did you sleep at the rink? How did you have an 11:30 start and get into bed at 1:30...?!?!

game ends at 12:30ish at the earliest. Doesn’t feel unreasonable considering I have to wind down in the locker room and then change, drive home (15-20 minutes), shower, get ready for bed, etc

I try not to get too involved with extracurricular stuff because, at the end of the day, we all need to wake up for work tomorrow.

But damn if some dadholes don't make it difficult to avoid them.

Dek last night. I was not really close to the net. Old, short, and fat D man comes over and throws an open-handed punch/slap to try and move me. Odd strategy, not very effective. Anyway I hold my ground until he takes 2 more shots at me (this time with a closed fist). Again, I'm mostly bewildered by the choice, but now I'm kind of annoyed because it's not exactly accidental/a reasonable attempt at playing the position.

He goes into the corner to follow the play, which then goes up to the point. I see him coming for round 3 out of the corner of my eye, so I brace and stick my elbow out a bit. Not forcefully, but protecting myself in case he tries to run through my blindside.

He ran his sternum right into my elbow, and starts complaining to the ref. Spent the rest of the night trying to run me. 1st time I got him with a reverse hit. 2nd time avoided. 3rd time avoided and sprung my center for a breakaway because that dude ignored him to take a run at me (didn't score but it would've been glorious). Anyway, dude spends the rest of the game pissed off.

End of game handshake comes and he ducks me even though I'm there ready to fist bump and say good game, which pissed me off but we got at 3-0 win so I'm not losing sleep over it.

Just typical adult league starting **** and getting surprised when it gets dished back at you. Gotta love it.

Scheduling grievance:

Dude who schedules for our dek league is the worst. Before the season started, we gave him a list of our ice team's games since half our roster is on that ice team. He decided he was going to "schedule around" our ice schedule by literally just scheduling us the day before or the day after ice.

Starting this coming Friday, here's my 11 day schedule:

Friday: Dek
Saturday: Ice
Sunday: Off
Monday: Off
Tuesday: Off
Wednesday: Ice
Thursday: Dek
Friday: Dek
Saturday: Off
Sunday: Off
Monday: Dek

After the last dek game, we have TEN days off, and then once again play a back to back ice/dek.

I understand scheduling isn't easy, but holy ****, at least make it look like you aren't trying to kill us.

Love that schedule. My spring-early summer is monday-wednesday-thursday... both teams play pretty much weekly and we have a pickup skate from april-july. Best time of the year

As if it couldn't get any more hilarious, our ice team had a game rescheduled to the exact same time as our dek game on the 8th.

16 days between our already-scheduled ice games (4/3 and 4/19) and that just happens to be the only slot he has open lol.

Can't make this up.

On one side, you have the Kelly Cup playoffs between Wheeling and Indianapolis. On the other side, you have D league beer hockey...

Has a bigger dichotomy of adult hockey been played at the same rink at the same time?

That's one of my biggest reasons why I'm more or less retired from beer league hockey. I'm not built for those late night games anymore. Yeah, it's kinda cool to be playing games at midnight, but leaving the rink at 1ish so I can be at work at 630? No thanks.

our members complain about any game that starts after 10:00PM. I tell them, some people start games at midnight.
they also complain about games on Saturday and Sunday because their kids have activities.

We just got our roller schedule for the spring.. Latest game is at 9:30 PM. Crazy. Considering we usually have at least 3 11:30 games

I only play games that start after 9/9:30 PM if it's a weekend or I work from home the next day.

The E league I played in over in New Ken was Sundays and Tuesdays and we had games start as late as 12, if I remember correctly. I was able to make it work via youthful exuberance, but stopped in 2019 because I just couldn't do it anymore.

Haha this is the time of year where my games start between 8 and 930 and my wife hates me.

After 3 kids, 11pm starts stink but I'd rather have less sleep than an angry wife lol.

I'd say 9:30-10:30 is my sweet spot

do any of you benders use grip tape on your knobs? Do you use only grip tape or is it just a wrap over a normal cloth tape job?

mini meow wants to start using it this coming season. I’m out of my element

I decided to use it on my ice stick. I think I taped a normal tape knob, then went over that with the grip.

I've also seen people just do the thicker part up top with the regular tape, and then grip for the rest.

I hate grip tape on the knob. it breaks down the palms of your gloves quicker. I'm not a fan of the grip/sticky on the rest of the stick either and it's getting much harder to buy sticks "off the rack" without grip.

vent: had a goalie hit in me in the head with a puck Friday night. my linemate had scored and I was skating back towards center ice when I felt something hit the back of my neck. I turned around and was like, "WTF????" not even realizing what it was. my SO (also on my line) kept saying, "let it go! it was an accident. he didn't mean it." and I realized the goalie, in a temper tantrum had flipped the puck up the ice. no apology, no remorse, no acknowledgement from him. Jerk.

I doubt it was on purpose. If they were that skilled they wouldn't have been scored on in the first place. ;)
