Easily doable. Like dodint said, the eating part, not the muscle part.

Speaking of, my desire to play league hockey coupled with me needing to fit in a formula car in June has me back on the CICO train. Need to shed about 23lbs between now and mid-June.

To help build muscle faster, my trainer told me to get 3044-3608 calories/day.

I'm not even sure that's physically possible.
How is that not possible? What the hell do you eat on a daily basis? Any idea how many calories you're eating now? It could be as simple as including a protein shake with every meal or as difficult as needing to completely change your diet. I read this story from powerlifter Dave Tate years ago and it always cracked me up/made me jealous because I'm a fatty who can't lose weight.
There was a time at the Old Westside gym where I couldn't gain weight to save my **** life.
There was this dude who trained there who could just put on weight like **** magic. He'd go from 198 to 308 and then to 275 and back down to 198. And he was never fat. It was amazing.
I finally asked him one day how he did it.

"You mean I never told you the secret to gaining weight? Come outside and I'll fill you in."

Now remember, we're at Westside Barbell. And this guy wants to go outside to talk so no one else can hear. Think about that for a minute. What the hell is he going to tell me? This must be some serious **** if we have to go outside, I thought.
So we get outside and he starts talking.

"For breakfast you need to eat four of those breakfast sandwiches from McDonalds. I don't care which ones you get, but make sure to get four. Order four hash browns, too. Now grab two packs of mayonnaise and put them on the hash browns and then slip them into the sandwiches. Squish that **** down and eat. That's your breakfast."

At this point I'm thinking this guy is nuts. But he's completely serious.

"For lunch you're gonna eat Chinese food. Now I don't want you eating that crappy stuff. You wanna get the stuff with MSG. None of that non-MSG bullshit. I don't care what you eat but you have to sit down and eat for at least 45 minutes straight. You can't let go of the fork. Eat until your eyes swell up."

"For dinner you're gonna order an extra-large pizza with everything on it. Literally everything. If you don't like sardines, don't put 'em on, but anything else that you like you have to load it on there. After you pay the delivery guy, I want you to take the pie to your coffee table, open that **** up, and grab a bottle of oil. It can be olive oil, canola oil, whatever. Anything but motor oil. And I want you to pour that **** over the pie until half of the bottle is gone. Just soak the **** out of it."

"Now before you lay into it, I want you to sit on your couch and just stare at that ****. I want you to understand that that pizza right there is keeping you from your goals."

This guy is in a zen-like state when he's talking about this.

"Now you're on the clock," he continues. "After 20 minutes your brain is going to tell you you're full. Don't listen to that ****. You have to try and eat as much of the pizza as you can before that 20-minute mark. Double up pieces if you have to. I'm telling you now, you're going to get three or four pieces in and you're gonna want to quit. You **** can't quit. You have to sit on that couch until every piece is done.

And if you can't finish it, don't you ever come back to me and tell me you can't gain weight. 'Cause I'm gonna tell you that you don't give a **** about getting bigger and you don't care how much you lift!"
Tate went from 260 to 297 in two months and had minimal body fat increase. Obviously that's an extreme level, but the point is that if you're having trouble eating enough calories sometimes the best way to do it is to eat **** food.

You have to be in a calorie surplus to build muscle. You aren't building muscle in a deficit.

3500 calories a day isn't that hard to consume. If anything at the end of the day eat a few tablespoons of peanut butter will tack in calories quick. Eat full fat stuff instead of low fat, use butter more generously or cooking oils etc...eat an ice cream sandwich at the end of the day lol.

That's a very specific range.

There were also recommendations for protein intake as well.

I am fairly active so I'm burning a lot of calories on a normal basis. I don't think I'm keeping up with what I'm burning off.

We did some quick calculations based on my body weight going into my workout yesterday. I was at 183 prior to my concussion and dropped 6 pounds.

I feel like I eat a lot already. I just have no idea where to gain the extra calories from that would also be enjoyable to consume.

A scoop of ON whey protein blended with two tablespoons of peanut butter and a cup of whole milk is like 450 calories. Drink two of those between each of your primary meals or drink one which each of your meals and you're looking at adding 900 to 1,350 calories to your current intake.

Health isn’t about eating enjoyably, Randall! Shove a pizza pie down your gullet.

But I already do that :pop:

I meant the whole protein shakes that taste like chalk thing. If I could find one that tasted halfway decent I'd do it.

There's also protein bars as an option.

You don't like peanut butter? Seriously get a jar of peanut butter and eat a few tablespoons... couple hundred calories easily.

Eat some ice cream at the end of the day. Eat some chocolate.

Protein shakes are gross, as are most protein bars. Yogurt is a good source of protein. I get the dannon flavored stuff and its like 12g protein per serving.. only 80 calories .Could get the full fat stuff and get more protein plus more calories. Or get plain(yuck) and spice it up with your own fruits and whatever.

Get some chicken and add lots of cheese to it or something. Chicken is high in protein but since its low in calories dump some yummy stuff on top of it and eat lots of it.

Also in regards to calories.. I'm in the mid 180's, 34 and like 6ft. I have to eat 2300ish calories a day just to maintain my weight if I do no exercise at all and just sit around all day(not bedridden, but not active much at all). MR is way younger than me(assuming so at least) so that number his trainer through out doesn't seem too crazy if he is trying to put on some weight and some muscle. Especially if he is burning lots of calories doing whatever activities.

Hmmm. Pitt does BMR/RMR testing. Takes an hour and costs $75. I'd love to know what my BMR is now, haven't had it formally check in about 7 years.

I would be curious to do this as well, but for the most part me just going by the normal numbers and my testing with cutting so much out it seems I'm pretty much in the normal range of what most online calculators say.

I don't think I've had a chalky protein powder in like 15 years. Stick with stuff that isn't bottom shelf and you'll be fine.

On another note, I just had 1600 calories of Panda Express, so maybe it's not as hard as I thought

Teriyaki chicken
Beijing beef
Orange chicken
Chow mein

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ my trainer said it was perfect for what I'm trying to accomplish.
