This guy just likes hearing himself talk. He'll still have access to this app via our Citrix Desktop, WHICH IS HOW HE ACCESSES THE CURRENT VERSION OF THIS PRODUCT, FROM HIS MAC.

How's the lag on that Citrix desktop? The app I need in windows can be a fairly heavy load so Parallels (which is what I was using to emulate Windows) struggled to run it. Having to reboot to access Windows in Bootcamp sucks. Especially when I forgot to move something over to the cloud and it's stuck on the Mac side.

What lag? :) Citrix is the ultimate performer when it comes to the remote experience. If you've got a graphics-heavy app, using a GPU in your environment goes a long way. Which app are you referring to?

Can you join our IT team?

I need occasional access to Articulate Storyline 3. And depending on the project, the file can turn into a beast fairly quickly. I've been trying to convince the team to move to Storyline 360, which is their newest software that uses a subscription model (shocking), but it's been a tough sell considering we'd go from outright owning the software to paying a yearly fee. It's available for Mac, though, so it would be a huge improvement on my end.

Wait a minute, you're in content creation, no? I recall talking to you about video editing in the past. In that case, you would absolutely, 100% require GPUs in your remote environment in order to be able to do that work remotely. It wouldn't be as smooth as running it locally on a powerful machine, but I imagine that it would be able to at least match the performance of running it on Parallels.

Storyline isn't supported in Citrix, VMware, etc., apparently:
Storyline isn't supported in client-server environments, such as Citrix, VMware ThinApp, and Wyse Thin Client. These environments share or divide virtual resources among multiple client machines, which causes problems for authoring apps like Storyline.
Their reasoning is a little goofy, and inaccurate, but the lack of support usually kills initiatives to virtualize applications.

Yeah, I am. My previous title was simply "video editor" but I recently moved to the professional development team so I got the fancy new title of "learning media designer." All that really means is I've gone from creating 3-5 min marketing videos to creating 3-5 hour PD video courses. Parallels struggled to keep up and the experience was pretty ****. Bootcamp runs flawlessly but like I said, having to reboot to jump to Windows and back is a pain in the ass.

Welp there goes that. I'm going to keep pushing for the Storyline 360 subscription. As you can imagine, nobody is too keen on spending money right now.

Yep, we're in the same boat. We've used Covid to finally make some changes in software, and have saved over $1m in the process, but we're still being stingy. We were going to ask our big vendors (Citrix, VMware, etc.) to see if we could alter our contract payment plan to save a few bucks up front to get us through this.

I can't imagine waiting 100 days for an offer, so I applaud your patience.
I was happy in my existing job, lower profile and did my own thing. The new title had to be approved by a 10-person committee and then go to the governor’s office for approval...and that’s where it takes time.

Remember when I mentioned how I'm probably going to take time off in mid-September to help my kids get back into schoolwork and maintain my wife's sanity? How I felt guilty about shafting my already depleted staff?

So, we've been open with classes for two weeks as of tomorrow. I got an email Sunday night - after we'd been in class only 4 days (in person classes started Tuesday the 18th) - from our Dean asking if the library could stay open an hour later each night. Students were already complaining we weren't open long enough. I responded that our hours meet or exceed the largest public universities in the region and state, with a fraction of the staff. In addition, we have a door counter...and the most we've had in the building the last few hours we're open is around 7 people. This includes my staff exiting and entering the building as well as campus security who patrol each hour. I felt that closer to the middle of the semester we could probably expand the hours. The Dean thanks me for the data, and wants to pass it up the chain.

Monday morning I get an email response - the new president, who fielded the complaints from the students - wants us to open the extra hour anyway, Just to see how it goes for a few weeks. So I was completely overruled, despite having knowledge of the campus, our building and staffing, and actual data.

Whinge enough to the right people, and you'll get your way. Every damn time. It's exhausting.

It'd be nice if you could document which students were complaining to see if those students take advantage of the longer hours.

Happens all the time an this uni, too. The dumbest student requests gets to the top and the order comes down to a bunch of people shaking their heads.

It's usually the student government leaders or student athlete council members.

Three years ago I met with the student body president and one of the other officers, and they pleaded with me to stay open during exams until 2am. I think we had 5 extra people from midnight to 2am. Not worth our while.

Anyone do freelance graphic design and want to help me with a logo? Shouldn't take long at all. I already have it mocked up but it's something a did in paint using existing public domain free clipart (big spender!) but it's all jaggy and and stuff. Looking to have it rerendered by someone who is not an idiot (like me) and returned in a file format with a transparent background and that I can resize without it looking bad. It's just a silhouette, black and white. It'll be used on letterhead, social media, etc. until I get around to doing a full design package someday.

Happy to PayPal you whatever you think is fair.

@malkintent

Also, reddit has a subreddit for people looking for design work. I actually got 4 or 5 logos designed for my "brewery" on there for $50. Was pretty awesome.

Check out GIMP, too, if you want to dabble without buying Photoshop.

Every once in awhile, I get impostor syndrome, then I pick up new work because another team is slow on it, and I must be doing something right, if someone is coming to me to ask for help.

Impostor syndrome sucks, and I wish there was a way to completely remove it.
