Is it some sort of agile nonsense? We've had a push for an agile approach here and what it amounts to is a **** ton of 15 minute meetings where nobody really says anything of consequence but you feel like you have to speak otherwise people will think you haven't done any work since yesterday when you last met about this project.

This is just what PMs do. There's one good PM for every 60k bad ones.

Wow. I actually just had someone in the real world, through email, answer 'yes' to an 'A' or 'B' question.

Just saw that a co-worker taped a sign to the back of her chair that says "Do not disturb when headphones are in. Reserved for dedicated tasking time."

Ugh.

We had a senior manager at one point a few years ago ago send an office wide email out that she was only available for questions the first 15 minutes of every hour and the other 45 minutes was to be left alone to work on her stuff uninterrupted

This sounds like my current CTO. If not, a close relative.

lol what kind of new-age nonsense is this? If you're not in a meeting, you're fair game.

Update from previous updates:

Looks like I officially will become a manager in my current role this week, when HR kicks off the process.

There's still the other position that's open, and that director wants to talk to my current boss to gauge how he'd feel if I apply.

Should be an interesting month or so.

I'm guessing it's in response to the new open office layout. For my job, I have to have headphones on 90% of the day and that has never stopped people from coming around and asking me questions. Nor should it. If I'm in the middle of something and their question is something that requires more time than just a quick response, I tell them I'm working on something else now and give an roundabout time on when I can get to their request. That's how offices work.

I share an office space with our IT department.

Occasionally, I'll walk back to my office, there will be signs on their doors that state "Team member is working on a MISSION CRITICAL PROJECT. Please do not disturb."

Me:

Of course, when they are all on a Mission Critical Project, that means I'll get knocks on my door about IT stuff:

Student: "Are you in IT?"
Me: No, I'm not (vaguely gesturing to the name/title on my door).
Student: "Oh, OK. Can you help my with my email account?"
Me: ...

Unless your job directly relates to saving lives, there is nothing critical enough going on that you can't take 2 minutes to answer a question.

It only requires 2 seconds to say "please submit a ticket".

lol mission critical. I've found that any time a dev person makes up an "emergency" they're just usually behind on projects they put off in the first place.

Yes, "Mission Critical" nonsense is what happens when you put an introverted literature professor (with an instructional technology MA degree) in charge of IT.

Similar to how all an end user has to say here is that the issue affects "patient care", and it's immediately escalated.

These two useless PMs complain nearly every day how the people that arrive an hour after they do also leave an hour before they do. Oh, I don’t know, maybe it’s because you BS and socialize for two hours out of your day. Don’t complain that other people are more efficient and/or have different workload than you.

Our system has a "VIP" tag used for ticketing items. I've seen that thing stretched pretty far.

So i applied for a lateral position at work last week and had an interview today. I am interested in management and felt that this could be an opportunity to be more well rounded, or at the least get me in the interview groove.

It was the most prepared I've ever been for an interview. I read our competency dictionary and had 15 plus example stories that I felt confident shaped my ability and skillset.

Then they asked me a total of 4 questions, of which all 4 were completely unrelated to any of my scenarios.

I freaking hate interviews.

I hate them too. I was asked a technical question in an interview recently and the answer was something I knew easy about 15 years ago out of college, but now I felt myself wiping the cobwebs away in my brain and stumbling through the answer. Probably botched the interview. Ah well.

So I've learned that I am in fact getting a promotion this week. I've also found out, my counterpart, who I personally enjoy working with, is looking to leave because of it.

That stinks, but it's life in the show, I suppose.

lol yea, I'm excited because I've worked my ass off for this title, imo. I'm not the least bit offended if the person leaves, I understand it.

That all being said, still another position open that I may gun for too, which kind of wrecks plans anyways, but it's good enough that I have to go for it, I think.

3 months now in my new role, and got a pretty glowing review/feedback from my manager on how I have fit in so far. It was reassuring to hear. I thought I was fitting in and doing well, but good to hear from my manager.
