congrats shaf. That’s cool

So I’m 7 days into my job but I’m getting very excited with what I am planning to do. It’s funny because when I talked to my manager peers, they’re all like “you were brought in to bring a fresh perspective” and it’s funny how in need they are for that. I’m gonna try to move people to use Slack instead of emails and I’m gonna start an unofficial 4 day work week kind of thing for my team.

My peers have also talked about how hard it is to hire so my first question is “why would a good software engineer join this company?” and they’re like “we know, it’s boring”. I think I can attract a lot of my former coworkers with a promise of a great work life balance

I have to use 12.5 PTO days by the end of the year or they're gone. December is going to feel so weird as I'll only be working 2 four day weeks and a 3 day week.

I feel you. Dec 16th is my last working day of the year. Plus I took off an extra day next week and a day the following week to make Thanksgiving longer.

We're still under the "permissive, unlimited vacation" policy at work. I've vowed to get at least 4 weeks in per year. Taking the Monday after Thanksgiving off, putting me at 15.5 days this year. Christmas week will be another 4 days, so it looks like I should meet my goal with another day sprinkled in there.

I get 24 PTO days a year and can carry over 30. I saved up a ton during COVID, just thinking "alright... if anything happens where I have to be home with the kid for an extended period of time, I'll have PTO I can burn." I never had to use it.

Luckily I'm starting the year with a really nicely padded PTO bank that I can use for fun things in the nicer months.

I get a ridiculous amount of PTO a year. Something like 6.5 weeks. 10.54 hours every two weeks. We can hold 500 hours. I’m at like 300 and typically cash out around 80 a year. Those payout paychecks are pretty pretty pretty nice.

Well ya see MIMH, when you have a big boy job, you have to actually work at it. Weird concept I know.

My wife sells back tons of PTO at least 40 to 80 hours every January. Mine is use it or lose it. I'd use it anyways. Time off is more valuable to me than money.

It was one of the best perks at my last job. Cashing out 120 hours during a 3 paycheck month was like hitting the lottery. New place doesn’t do it, but they encourage you to take all of your time so you don’t lose it (can only carry over 7 days).
