Well, the kids took it very well - almost TOO well. The 15 year old was asking questions about my job, my wife's potential job, and was very open to moving (he has a "serious" girlfriend too). The 13 year old was less enthusiastic, but that's how he is about everything. :lol:

I'm feeling pretty good about how it came together today.
Good stuff DG. My 5 year old believes he will live in our house until he's 100 years old. We have no plans on moving, but if it ever came to that he would be crushed.

After 8+ years away in 3 different states during that time I accepted an opportunity back in the Pittsburgh area. Really excited to get back to friends and family but weird leaving my first "real job" after 8 years.
I worked away from Pittsburgh for 3 years, and moving back made me appreciate it much more. It still has its ugly side, but hopefully you'll have a similar experience. Good luck and congrats!

Yesterday right at close of business, the COO sent out an all staff email detailing return to office: Jan 10th return with the usual "if you have covid stay home" stuff. He reiterated how excited he was to see us back at the office. This morning I got an email from the head of our department saying she asked for and was granted an exemption for our team so we can continue WFH. She made up some business excuse but in reality she doesn't want to go back as much as we don't.

Oh and the CEO sent out an email that says vaccines are required (again) and this time the deadline is Feb 15th. The original deadline before it was postponed was Jan 10th so if they just kept the same deadline everybody would be vaccinated in time to return to office.

I told her she needed to go for this job and she didnt want it. it's going to be deja vu all over again soon, I'm sure.

I have no idea. I had asked her to text her mom about something and she says "OK I will but once I'm off, I know she will call me back and my new boss doesnt like that". Like she cant take a 5 minute personal phone call I guess? I told her it's only a matter of time before she micromanages other aspects of her job; right now she's after generic stuff since it's only week 2.

Good news for my current staff: my position will be replaced immediately (this was not a given, considering the hiring freeze)

Bad news for me: I get to write the job description.

It looks like I will indeed get to take (paid out for) my entire unused vacation time (25 days).

Received an amusing all hands e-mail from our deputy director this morning.
Subject: Reminder of the Open Door Policy and how to use it
The Director and I both believe that our employees are our organization’s most important resource and that open communication, with an atmosphere of mutual trust, is of prime importance to everyone.

Any member of the [agency] requesting to discuss an issue with me, or the Director, should address the Chief of Mission Support in writing. The request should describe the nature of the issue, why my, or the Director’s, personal attention is required and the steps previously taken to resolve the issue(s). Each request will be reviewed on an individual basis and receive a timely response.

So, our director and deputy directors open door policy is to submit your concern in writing to an intermediary who will judge if it's worthy of being brought to the attention of the person with the open door. :lol:

I'm fine with them closing the door, I am pretty sure this 'reminder' is because they're being bombarded by antivaxxers and it's taking up their time. But don't pat yourself on the back for having a progressive open door policy in the c-suite and then bury it in procedure.

I'm in a really weird spot in our company...

I'm senior enough that everyone listens to what I have to say and typically does what I say, but I'm not senior enough to delegate anything to anyone (I don't manage anyone...).

For instance, there's a conference coming to Pittsburgh in the fall that would be very valuable for our company. A lot of really good talks, an expo floor full of new/interesting technology that we could potentially incorporate, and it as a cheap registration cost. Overall it'll be good to go to it.

I forward the information to the proper people who should be attending and I get a response of "Well... you should go." No... that's not why I'm forwarding this information. I'm forwarding it for other people to go, not me. There are 3 or 4 conferences in the fall that are worthwhile. I can't go to all of them and I'm already slotted for one. That's about my limit.

I understand timesheets if you're billable to another company. If you're salary and filling out timesheets for your boss or your company only, yea that's garbage.

Yeah, absolutely.
The problem is the job is local, and my sister also works there. But she absolutely could be paid more somewhere else and probably fully remote as well. I guess if it gets to that point. She doesn't seem to be as unhappy as she was in the past, but I have a hard time thinking it's not going to get worse.

Our director told us yesterday that Operations was complaining about our team (the whole HR Team, not just recruiting) being "non-responsive". The reaction on the call was hostile, to say the least. I can name at least a half dozen instances in the last six months where the VP OF OPERATIONS did not respond to me for a time-sensitive issue, or did not contact a doctor I recruited to follow up. Rather than throw her under the bus to the president of the organization, I try and be patient. Not only that, but our team probably responds to 99% of emails within one hour, so no idea where this is coming from.

What made it all the more infuriating is the timing of it. Our main HR generalist just went out on maternity leave, the new HR Generalist took forever to get up to speed because the VP OF OPERATIONS kept dragging her feet on replacing her so she could transfer to our team. I have one recruiter that is 34 weeks pregnant with COVID, another just got over COVID, half my family has COVID, we are in the middle of the biggest surge of the pandemic, and the **** holidays just ended.

Literally go **** yourselves.
