Job and General Employment Thread

Postby tifosi77 » Fri Aug 16, 2019 9:41 pm

Had a run of really good news over the last two weeks. Successful phone screens with an organization (outside the gaming industry, but with a really unique appeal) led to in-person interviews with three attorneys and HR on Friday last week. First thing Monday I get a note from the recruiter saying they want to move forward with me, and would like my avails to meet the CLO this week. Checked in on Tuesday, recruiter said he was awaiting direction from Legal. That is the last I've heard from him; he did not respond to my message today.

*sigh*

If Shad has taught us anything, you should have called and left at least 5 messages while also sending a dozen emails.

Glad to see some positive movement on that front.

Oddly enough, this just happened yesterday. While I was on the other line, six calls and one voicemail.

I really hope it's just institutional sluggishness, and not a change of heart. This opportunity is legitimately in once-in-a-lifetime kind of territory.

My guess is unintentional slowness. I wouldn’t fret too much yet. Hasn’t been that long.

The bigger the organization the slower they go. At least in my experience.

As of today, it's a pretty small group (<60). But it will be growing into a very large organization over the next few years.

Fingers crossed. I would really, really, really love to be a part of this.

Got a meeting request for my manager and the CTO to, for the third time, discuss an upcoming change I want to implement. No disruption to services, and I’ve already provided a high level overview. That should have been enough, but because our CTO is incompetent, I have to present this in person. I assume I’ll have to draw a diagram with the way things have been going lately.

On top of that, the meeting was scheduled on one of my work from home days. Thankfully, I’m real cool with her admin, so I was able to move the meeting to a more convenient time. Which brings up another interesting fact about this woman. She a) refuses to take meetings on Mondays, b) will only accept meeting invites between 10am-3pm Tuesday through Thursday, and c) takes off every single Friday of the year. This is a C level executive.

Hah, maybe she gets an early start to weekend drinking and needs Monday to recover.

What if the CEO needs to meet with her on a Monday or Friday or 4PM on a Wednesday? Does she tell the CEO “no”?

If she needs to meet her on Friday, she'd have to either do it by phone or drive to the Jersey shore, because that's where she is every weekend. This person failed as a project manager, and has basically been promoted up the chain because she's besties with our CIO.

Lately I've been working fairly late (after 5:30), and at the end of the day, the only people that are still there are C level execs and Director-level folks. She's lucky to have fallen into a C level job.

So I got an update. The reason why the recruiter had gone radio silent is because he was moving house, and was OOTO Thursday, Friday, and Monday. Universally high feedback from all parties, and the general perception was that I was the leading candidate (and by some measure). Based on that feedback and his own evaluation, and the fact that the CLO removed himself from the interview chain because of changing travel commits, he believed the first thing he'd be doing yesterday when he returned to the office was writing me an offer letter. But one of the days he was out, they tendered an offer to another candidate. He was blindsided (his word) by the move, and was not really sure why that happened and why he wasn't a part of that process. I didn't ask what day the offer was sent out, but he did note that they had not heard back from the other person as of yesterday and their offers expire after five days.

There's still a chance this could come together (he said if not this position, I'd be first in line for a phone call if they added another headcount), but however you cut it that's a very bizarre story.

I hope the offer process isn't an indicator of the work environment. Yikes.

My project manager is a meetings for meetings kind of person. It's gotten to the point where I just mark my attendance of tentative to everything, even after having the conversation to ease it up.

Isn't that taught in the first day of class at PM 101? Set up as many meetings as possible?

It's agonizing because there are days where we meet, struggle to really find anything to say, and hang up.
