Two teenagers...U-Haul is the only option. You have a built in moving team that overcharges and complains already.

Well, I accepted the position this morning. The start date is March 1, with hopes to have us moved down there in early June. I'll be living solo for 3 months or so, which should be fun.

We floated the idea to both kids and both were lukewarm to moving, even the Nihilist 13 year old. I expected the 15-year-old with a girlfriend to have issues with it, and we'll get pushback from him, unfortunately. He was very honest though - he would prefer not to move, but would understand it if it was best for the family. Which I think it is. We're moving about 2 hours away, which isn't from Pittsburgh to SC like I did when I was his age. That was a huge change for me; this move we'd have the same TV channels and US House Representative (lol).

We haven't told them I've accepted it because we need to keep it quiet for as long as possible. Both kids attend schools with kids that have families that work here and don't need the news leaking too soon.

It's not going to be easy, but with texting/facetime/Discord, it's easier than when I moved as a kid. I actually wrote letters (!) to my friends, right up until college when we all got email (early 1990s). My 13 year old plays video games with kids from school, and often they'd rather stay home and play online with each other, so everyone has their own PC or console. (Yes, they do get together to play soccer etc., and that will be tough).

Week 2 of Fall Break is shaping up nicely. Only one day with questionable golf weather. Couple lunches planned with some friends and family. Some yardwork planned. I'm ready to retire

You and I are just a couple months apart in age, right? High school papers all on typewriters, college papers all on computer. :D

A manual typewriter? We didn't have those fancy electric ones.

We had electric typewriters in middle school. I learned on an old mechanical typewriter at home.

That is so stupid and obviously a paid corporate shill piece. Even when I was working in the office, everyone still took their laptop home at COB and many worked. What a joke.

I do think though the more common occurrence of having a work phone or something like that tethers people even more to never actually shutting down for the day. You can walk away from your PC even at home, but your phone is always with you etc.

In a lot of cases, that's on the individual. Most of my team has Outlook and Teams installed on their personal phone, and check it throughout the day. I do not, because that's defeating the purpose of work/life balance. If **** hits the fan, somebody can call my cell.

That said, they mention the average work day increasing by a little over 45 minutes. Fine with me, if that's the trade-off - especially when that still means that I am spending more time away from work, given that my old commute was 60-70 minutes each way.

I refused to get a work phone, they have my personal number obviously and my favorite thing in the work world is hitting decline and seeing all those missed work calls after hours. Sorry, you want to **** me and cut jobs and give me their work and not their pay, you can wait until I'm in the office next day.

What's the consensus on follow up emails to a potential employer? I've already had a few email exchanges: first contact, sending resume, follow up 2 weeks after sending resume. I got a response each time, but now it's been 3 weeks since the last email exchange. I was told to have some patience with this one, so don't want to seem too desperate. Is there a situation where it makes sense to follow up again?

I also passed on a work phone at my current employer. I had one at my last job and carrying two phones was annoying af. I get a stipend now for using my personal cell, but I rarely do more than glance at email after hours. I'm technically on-call 24/7, but even that doesn't give me much action.

Being on both sides (!!!) of this issue, I don't think it's unreasonable for you to check in at this point, unless they gave you a specific timeline. Like they won't make a decision for a month, and you're at the three-week mark, for instance.
