Got a notice this week that we'll be getting some our merit increases this year after all. They cancelled the increases 2 weeks before we were due to get them in late March. I guess we outperformed our new objectives so the company's heart grew two sizes and decided to give us a lump sum of what would have been our merit increase from April thru December.
Our base pay will still be the same for calculating merit increases for next year and the lump sum is only April thru December, but better than nothing. It's a small silver lining that I won't complain about.

I think I want to retire December 31, 2022. It's actually the end of a pay period. Nice and neat. The week after I turn 40.
I put it on the calendar. Feels good to set a date.

Yeah. I was going to try and do both for about 5 years and build up my retirement accounts a bit more, but, honestly, I really don't like my job anymore and want to hit eject. I think if I put a solid end date on it it will further drive me to develop my law practice. Not that I'm slacking off in that department, but still, motivation helps.Wow, that's awesome...

That’s awesome man. How long do you have to put into FedGov before you can retire?

With a pension? 10 years. I'm at 12 or so as I bought back my military time. It's High 3 x Years x Pension Multiplier; so I don't have to get all the way to 20 like the military or anything. It'll be a significantly smaller pension than if I had stayed in for the 25 years or so that I planned, obviously. But if I'm successful as a small business owner that won't matter.
I am kind of bummed I'll never make it to the top tier of the leave accrual ladder, that kicks in at 14 years. That carrot has been dangling a long time.

I've seen a ton of FedGov librarian jobs, including one at Fort Jackson. Is it worth my time looking into those? Salaries look decent, just not sure I want to work as a civilian on a military base. Pension sounds enticing though.

My old desk was right next to our librarian. Does it mean what you think it does? It's probably not a literal library. Ours does records management and helps with the mail room.
I think it's worth your time to at least apply. FedGov work is very secure, great benefits, insulated from economic downturns, set work schedules. For that reason they're very competitive, so you may have to apply a few times. If you want help with the resume, it's very different than private sector, let me know.

Civilians on a military base have it pretty easy.

Interesting. I've just seen tons of "librarian" positions available via Indeed with the DoD, all over the place. The few that I've looked at are at the base library, but there are some data librarian positions as well. I'll need to research this a little bit.

Hey, that's cool if it's that kind of librarian. I would imagine the Records Management folks outnumber the 'book counter' librarians by a factor of 20:1 across the government which is why I was thinking that way.Interesting. I have this PM who we have a stand-up every day, and every day for the last week I keep saying no development was done for two fold, we're in a freeze, and it's a week before Christmas.
Every single day, she asks me when do we plan to kick back up and work, and I tell her Jan 4th. Literally every single day.

I work in healthcare, where freezes are generally pretty liberal.
