Job and General Employment Thread

At my previous job, our CIO thought I was standing at the timeclock waiting to swipe out because I was leaving at the same time each day. He had my manager confront me about it, which I thought was funny, because that's when I actually did start looking at the clock each day so that I could swipe out at a different time (+/- 2min) each day. Canaan.

Imagine how much overtime you'd rack up if you had the 5AF clock...

It felt like it. We all had to swipe in and out daily using one of these:

I barely have an actual set schedule at my current job, and haven't swiped into anything in 4 years. It's been enjoyable.

I haven't quite grasped why I have to input times. I'm a salary employee, but I still have to log into the company portal and input eight hours, every day.

I worked in factories before the military. One had the old school "ka-thunk" punch card clock. Was satisfying hitting that to leave.

Yeah, that boggled my mind. Salaried employees swiping in is just dumb.

It's probably because I'm salary exempt.

Yeah, to be fair, I have to login to our timekeeping system and setup charge codes every day and 'clock hours' but that's more because we have different projects with different funding. They allow us to pre-input data as far ahead as we want though so I only do it the first time I login during a pay period, or if there was an exception.

I guess it works in my favor as I'm 'salary' but anything over 40 hours and I get paid overtime. It's weird. I'm close to getting high enough on the ladder where that goes away, though.

We do the same thing every 2 weeks - login to Kronos Web and allocate 8 hours each day to whatever code (regular, work from home, vacation, etc.). I have no issues doing that at all.

I'm salaried non-exempt and have to fill out a timecard.

It's weird because I'm still considered "hourly" even though I make a set amount each month.

Salaried people doing timesheets is just straight up weird. One of the perks of being salaried is that you shouldn't have someone looking at your hours with a magnifying glass.

Unless one is in a profession that bills clients by the hour (specifically, by the tenth of an hour).

Guess you've never had a job where you are working on multiple contracts that have to be billed hourly to the specific customers?

I'm obviously not talking about billed positions...when I worked at my previous employer, I had to fill out a timesheet because we were a professional services firm that billed hours. I just meant in general...one of the perks I've always enjoyed about being salaried is the flexibility to take a two hour lunch if need be, leave a bit early/stay a bit late, etc.

This is the first in-house legal department I've ever worked in where everyone's hourly. OT has to be approved in advance, so it really helps encourage people to maintain a 40-hour week discipline.

The first month I was here, it was only a 35-hour week. It bumped up to 40 in January.

I used to hate working with employees in California. Not that it comes as a surprise, but your state has the most convoluted overtime laws in the country.

I've not found that to be the case, unless you're talking about it in terms of a misclassification thing for exempt v non-exempt.

Somebody just wrote an "LOL" in a reply-all e-mail to me that included a number of department heads. We've got a twofer on our hands here.

They replied "LOL" after I asked him if he was available to go over the requested configuration in order to meet a deadline (which we will now miss)...

Nice.

I got in "trouble" (not really, just a passive aggressive e-mail from the CEO about all user e-mails) for sending an all user response.

Someone sent an all-user e-mail about refilling ice trays...this is like the third time she's done it in, I don't know, 6 or 7 months maybe...so I responded with a screencap of a recipe for ice just in case anyone didn't know...it got a ton of positive feedback (none of which was all-user replied), but I'm quite sure I've gotten a lot of people banned from sending all-user e-mails as a result...I'm going to take that as a small victory...
