lets face it, the perception of being slighted is extremely easy at work. so even if it is innocuous, the opportunity for people to feel slighted is there

then again, people feel slighted over the dumbest things

What KTK said. I'm in that situation now but reverse for meetings. My boss often likes to meet with me 1v1 and talk about projects across the board within the team I'm working on. I never really chose that designation, but he asks for me, and that "slighted" feeling comes out across through the various people I talk to.

There's no shortage of opportunity for people to get upset. You can't control their feelings, so do what makes you happy.

I do not lunch with my reports. They are my worker bees and they will be treated as such!

The optics are not good. There are also reports that I’d rather not spend any more time with than I already must. Looking at you, urinal talker.

I try to keep my phone on vibrate but I'm sometimes guilty of having that thing on full ringer when I first show up, especially if somebody snags me as I'm walking in and haven't made it to my office yet. If I can make it to my office without interruption, I'll set it to vibrate and the alert will vibrate my watch twice.

Once I leave the office and get home, I'll usually put my watch on the charger and turn up the phone in case I'm upstairs or downstairs.

I turn off my ringer at work. Except for the time I forgot to do it and the whole office got treated to Pantera's Domination....

Saw this on a resume today, someone that was a camp counselor for a dog camp, apparently?

Depending on the position you're hiring for, that could be a very important skill set.

So you have, say, 10 people that report to you - but you only ask 1 or 2 of those people to go to lunch with you. You don't worry about the perception to the other 8 or 9 folks? (I want to be clear, I'm legitimately asking - not asking to be argumentative.)
I have no issue eating with people that report to me, or vice versa, my boss eating with others, or me. I go out to lunch with my boss all the time.

Then I'd like you to ask them what a 'fight hump' is and report back to us.

I definitely wish this was a swear board. I love to use the vernacular. Helps me from not physically harming people.
