As someone who cuts out earlier than usual if the boss is out, how early is "noticeably" early?
I was told at least an hour, possibly closer to two since they couldn't get an exact read off his Skype.

I'm not gonna say I'm a complete saint when it comes to staying until my assigned time. During golf season, it's not uncommon for me to disappear 10-15 minutes early. I also came in a little early or would take a short lunch to balance it out. Plus my boss knew about it, which is a huge difference. I think his issue was more that we'd get bumped behind a slower group if I didn't make our tee time.

If he took off "around" his end time, then whatever. But when HR comes down and asks why he was spotted leaving 20 minutes early (that one happened yesterday) and not saying a word to anybody, there's not much I can do.

I'm glad that nobody really gives anyone a hard time about time management at work. So long as the work's getting done at a high level, we're all good.

Ditto where I work. There are "core" hours technically which I think is like 10-3 where you are supposed to be readily available, but outside of that if your work gets done... no one says a word.

Yup. I have an extremely high amount of flexibility, and not once have I ever been questioned for having to work from home, go home early, come in late, etc.

I meant to follow up on my bonus post from last week. The other day, the president of my company came into my office, closed the door, and asked if I could keep a secret. He handed me a $500 Amazon gift card. Told me that he only picked up a few of these to hand out and wanted to thank me for being so on point this year and being able to work autonomously. Best feeling in the world--I am more motivated than ever to kick ass for him next year.

Sure is. One of the engineers asked if the company would be getting a bonus. The response was, "we don't ask for money back if we lose money." The company is probably 400+, even at $500 it'd be a drop in the bucket or roughly the size of the bonus that the guy will get...

This was the best year for bonuses that I've had in 5 years. Company-wide $500 bonus and on top of that I received a few staff awards which gets me a total of $900 extra on my last pay of the year. Before taxes, of course.

And how many millions from tax cuts did they use on stock buybacks. I know my company did that.

Probably be better off not knowing. I work for a global company. We sell our product overseas all the time. Truthfully I've only been there since May, it is going to give me the opportunity to complete my bachelors degree and either get an engineering position there or move on. I'm just a number and I knew that going in so I don't let it consume me like the old grumps that I work with.

I like to hit up Walmart after Christmas and buy all their decorations at 75% off.

Whelp, my wife is probably getting fired. She had a working manager that retired, her replacement lasted four weeks before moving to another job, so the three Indians were swamped without a Chief. In order to complete the increased workload, my wife stopped getting a form signed off as there'd been talk of another department handling it anyways. Well it turns out the people who had been auditing the cases stopped doing it (and they haven't exactly been playing well with my wife's department anyway), so they completed 6 weeks of cases without the form which could cost the company a lot of money.
She was told to go home and not comeback until she had received a call from her supervisor. I told her to expect the call to involve cleaning out her desk.
It's a symptom of a much larger systemic problem at the company, but she still failed to do part of her job regardless of the department being overloaded.
It's a shame because other than this case she busts her butt, consistently putting in overtime, takes on the crap cases nobody else wants to deal with, even put her license on the line at one time for them.

and that's generally the case here. If you come in a few minutes late in the AM or if you run 10-15 minutes over your lunch hour because it took forever to get the check, nobody cares. I know there's a few people here who take lunches that border on 90 minutes. Nothing is ever said to them.

But in this case, you would think that he should be somewhat of a model employee if he wanted to get hired. Zero motivation and zero f's given so far.

Sorry to hear that, but it sounds like she’s probably better off working for a less shitty company.

Well gents, it's officially the longest work day of the year. I just have to make it til 3:30 and I'm out til 1/2. Minutes might as well be hours at this point.

I'm meeting a friend in town for an extended lunch which will hopefully kill some time. Make it til 3-3:30 for "holiday drinks", stay for a maximum 20 mins, and I'm OUT.
