Job and General Employment Thread

Postby DigitalGypsy66 » Mon Jan 21, 2019 9:47 am

I'm actually taking two. :slug:

I took one Friday, but then had to go in for a 30 minute meeting at 4:30 in the afternoon. The only reason I didn't tell them to go pound sand was a
very senior college official was involved, one with a very difficult schedule to fit meetings into. And yes, the meeting could've been handled via email. So Friday doesn't count.

Does anyone else put their timecards in up to two weeks before the end of the month? We do that all the time. Our timecards were due Friday, and we get paid this Friday...but there are nine work days between when our timecards are due and the end of the month. All kinds of things can happen in that timeframe...and they usually do.

On a change control call right now, and some dickbag keeps yawning forcing everyone to repeat what they're saying. This clown isn't even paying attention, because we've asked them to go on mute multiple times now.

IS + military (particularly naval services) = acronym bliss/hell {delete as appropriate}
my previous job had so many acronyms that they dedicated a separate page to list all of them. When I left in 2017, it was approaching 1000 acronyms.

Not all of them seemed to be legit though. We had a few people submit WTF, which according to the site meant:

WTF - Wasted Total... I forget what the F stood for.
WTF - Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
WTF - Well Then Fix (It)

I'm 99% sure somebody from IT submitted the last one.

the number of employees at that company has sharply declined in the last five or six years, so that problem probably just worked itself out naturally.

I love hour long meetings dedicated to determining a meeting cadence going forward.

If my boss and boss's boss wasn't there, I'd have left.

We had a half an hour meeting last week to basically say "we're going to be having monthly meetings because someone asked about having more".

I don't really know why. I'm pretty sure only one person wants more meetings. It's a waste of everyone's time.

Where do yall look for job postings?

I use indeed and linked in. And either there aren't many jobs out there right now or the good companies don't use them
I use linkedin. There seem to be quite a few in my field. Hane not applied to any because my company is currently handing out severances like candy so I’m not leaving for free at this time.

What's considered a good severance? I checked my company's policy out of curiosity and it's basically a week's pay for every year of service. That doesn't seem good at all.

My buddy works @ Bayer and they're offering them 2 weeks for every year. THe bad part is, it doesn't sound like they have given him an end date, just that it's coming. so he's stuck in 'do i look for another job' or 'ride this out and get my severance'. I guess they did tell him it would be a 60 day notice, but still

I think he said 12 years. Not sure - I've only known him for the past 4-5 years.

I’d stay. I mean they are closing in 2 years right? Even still, at 12 years he is getting 24 weeks pay, plus 60 days notice. He should be able to find a job by then.

I remember by high school German teacher - good ol’ Frau Nill - was so proud a good German company like Bayer was in Pittsburgh. We may have had a field trip there at some point.

My company is giving a week and a half per year, so at 17 years I’d get 6 months pay plus my 22.5% bonus + 6 weeks PTO pay out. So I’d get 42 weeks pay more or less.

Well the job I just left is now in receivership. Talk about following my instincts and dodging a bullet.
They laid EVERYONE off today. Tons of friends asking how I found another job and got out. Really stinks. No severance or anything just basically we have no money. *shoulder shrug*

My company was paying out 50% of salary which is not bad. I suppose you can't go for unemployment until then.

I just completed the paperwork for my Philly tax refund due to working from home. $1800 back in my pocket.

I am headed up to Manhattan this afternoon...my company is hosting a beer/wine/hors d'oeuvre meet and greet from 7-10 on the Upper East Side for medical residents to pitch the company, network, etc. I'm leaving at 2:30 to allow for plenty of time...the one thing that is annoying about NYC is that virtually every parking garage is valet. I'd much rather just be able to park my own car, and if I get there early I can just chill for a while.

I'm just going to drive back tonight too, figure it would be much nicer to leave NYC at 10 PM vs. the morning.

The thing about leaving in the morning is that everyone is coming INTO the city, while you are LEAVING the city. But that probably doesn't matter much in a city the size of New York.

Yup. I would be leaving the Upper East Side and it's going to be bad regardless. I enjoy driving later at night when you're not fighting a ton of people on the road.
