Today I was in a final round interview and the company (legit one, btw) said whomever they pick has to go through a trial as a 1099 contractor just to see if the job is working out for the both of us and if all good, then I become a regular W2 employee. They asked about my current job situation and I mentioned I work full time 40 hours a week but could do their work on nights and weekends and was fine with the trial. Then they asked if my current position was in an office or remote and I answered in an office. Then they said they would take those answers into consideration when making a final decision.
Did I blow it mentioning I work full time and could do their stuff on nights and weekends? Should I have said I’d be willing to quit my current position to work as a 1099 for them? I feel like if they are deciding between me and someone else and the other person said they can do the 1099 work full time then that person will get picked.
Should I clarify my answer the thank you email? Or am I overanalyzing all this? I’ve never been asked that in an interview before.

I’d reach out and clarify. If a potential employee said they weren’t willing to leave their job for my open position, I’d trash their resume

That's... odd. I don't have any real advice and would've been blindsided by that question.

If an employer said "i want to hire you but i want to try you out first" I'd trash their interview, unless of course I knew that going in.I’d reach out and clarify. If a potential employee said they weren’t willing to leave their job for my open position, I’d trash their resume

No I didn’t know this going in. Hadn’t been mentioned in job posting or at any stage of interviewing until now. Since this was the first time being asked that question I did some research and apparently this is a modern trend for some companies to do. This is a company of 50 with a good rep but it is a job I would like to have.If an employer said "i want to hire you but i want to try you out first" I'd trash their interview, unless of course I knew that going in.I’d reach out and clarify. It’s a probationary period, albeit an atypical one.If an employer said "i want to hire you but i want to try you out first" I'd trash their interview, unless of course I knew that going in.I’d reach out and clarify. I’ve never seen that before, personally. It doesn’t surprise me, but I wouldn’t at all be interested in that kind of deal.

Yeah I'd say eff that. You did right. If you're a legit 1099 contractor you do the work on your time.

I drove 1hr 20 minutes today to a meeting where the person who was the main purpose for the meeting didn't show up.
Yeehaw.
Did you at least get paid to do so?

I have more story than this about me predicting this...but for now, I am - as preferred - without supervision...

The COO was in his 13th month here. Tried to bring structure and organization to a company that has been around for 35 years and didn't have a formal budget for any of those years...
He brought over two decades of experience from GE, and while he wasn't the most popular nor is he faultless, it was deemed not good enough (or whatever) for us...
Little odd, but things will just go back to how they were and at least we can say we tried I guess...

One of our Operations groups has a problem application that has been giving us headaches for years. Cisco finally gave us a special build of the application, but told us that it's 100% unsupported. The new build actually fixed all of the issues from the previous build. However, this group refuses to deploy it in Production because of the support thing. So, the users get to deal with the app crashing multiple times per day, every day. Bold strategy, dipshits. Enjoy the tickets.

There's no difference in terms of security between that build and the "supported" one; patches are no longer being developed for either of them.

Been a while since I've gotten 3+ paragraph hate mail after asking someone to justify an expense.
He told me he questioned how much the University was spending on someone to ask for justification on expenses. I almost told him "not nearly enough".

Sounds like a guy who is expensing things that he shouldn't.

It was something questionable, but had he put the information I needed in the report in the first place, I likely wouldn't have said anything and just let it go.

The one time I got called out on an expense (was actually an audit of my corporate card) it was when I took a friend to Hooters during a business trip. He loves the place, and it's right next to his house, and naturally that was the item they lined out and cc'd my boss on. It wasn't even the choice of restaurant, it just fell out a certain time window. I think they swiped the card on a Friday but the charge didn't hit until Tuesday or something so it fell outside of the window of my trip.

If I email you asking a specific question, please do not call me on the phone to respond. I emailed you because I either didn't want to talk to you, didn't have the time to talk to you, or wanted your response documented for future use. Thank you.
