Job and General Employment Thread
I had another of my staff resign to take another job, leaving us with three people. We had as many as seven full-time staff just a few years ago. Hard to run a university library with that number of people, especially as we head into exams. This position will not be replaced during this fiscal year, but our president told me that "things [enrollment] numbers look really good for the Fall, so we might might be able to add a part-time position in August." Yes, I'll be long gone, but that's horrible. Really awful.
One other staff - probably my successor - asked me to be a reference for another job closer to where his family is near Greenville. It's a public library, and those searches move a lot more quickly than college or university searches. He could be gone by early January, right when I'm officially putting in notice. Should be an interesting couple of months here.

Sounds very similar to my place of work, albeit totally different field. They’re dropping like flies where I amI had another of my staff resign to take another job, leaving us with three people. My wife is applying for that position tomorrow, and they require salary requirements to be listed. Since she’ll be a manager with 5-7 people reporting to her, I said that she should at least ask for a 10% increase, assuming they’d negotiate down a little. I’m not undercutting her there, am I? I actually think the original offer was only a 4% raise, which she would have declined.

Does she currently manage anyone now? I would want about 2% per each new underling so 10-14% unless she manages people now.

She does not, no. The job is hers if she wants it, so I don’t think they would be scared off if she asks for 10+%. The only sticking point is that all raises above 10% require leadership approval. I have no idea how much the other managers make.Does she currently manage anyone now? I would want about 2% per each new underling so 10-14% unless she manages people now.

They escorted my wife's boss out of the building today. One employee who left a few weeks ago wrote a letter outlining all the crap she endured I guess, which prompted the President to exit interview the second employee who left at the same time. And now she's gone.

I'm sure your wife is having an enjoyable Friday, based on what you've mentioned in the past.

Always good to hear shitty bosses paying the price. I've been waiting for 20 years for that to happen to one those bosses at work. He's bully and gets away with it.They escorted my wife's boss out of the building today. Now I need to convince her to apply for her backfill when the time comes.

I don't work a full 5 day work week the rest of the year after this week. Dec 16th is my last working day of the year as well.

I think the goal should be 10% then. Ask for 15 with the goal of getting a counter that says "10 is the best I can do without approval"She does not, no. So I've never negotiated for pay, mostly because I've always been happy enough with the offers and the anxiety of negotiating puts me off. However, I just was informally told I was getting a promotion during our upcoming re-org. There was no mention of pay increase. I was a it caught off guard about the promotion as it did not come up at all in the performance review.
With the re-org and hiring, my total team (not directly resorts) will be 4x is size. And it will be a global scope.
What do you all suggest to have the pay increase discussion? And how do I determine what is reasonable to ask for?

For example, mine is 7% with an exception process to get up to 10%. Any more than that and you basically need an EVP going to bat for you. The exception process is usually pretty futile too.
It also sounds like a pretty big jump in responsibility for you so I wouldn't think 10% would be an unreasonable request.
Also, congrats!

Yeah, that's standing operating procedure for our IT to forward a departed employee's email to their supervisor and/or replacement for a set period of time. This also includes Google Drive access, which eventually ends up in the department's shared Drive folder.
I found some interesting hiring documents when my supervisor retired back in 2016. She was hired after I came here, so she got her predecessor's files (it wasn't Drive, but a proprietary system via networked server drives). I found out that a grad school friend was in the running for my initial position here, but his on-site interview was awful - like he was borderline rude and disrespectful about the position, salary (lol), and the college itself. I knew he ended up at Virgnia Tech's library for a lot more money etc., and probably had received the offer shortly before the interview here. Lots of little weird things like that about other positions over the years.
I probably need to spend some time this winter break sanitizing my old emails and Drive.

This is like one of those moments when some idiot recklessly drives by you and you hope that this is finally the moment there is a cop right up the road and you can honk as you drive by as they get pulled over.My wife how has email access for her former boss since idk I guess the IT guy at her work isn't that good but anyway she came across an email from her boss to her director saying the problem with the department was my wife and that she wanted her fired. Your wife should send her something for Christmas to troll the heck out of her.

Guys, I love my new job.
In just this week, I have:
1. Had the AVC of my department come into my office at 4:40 and tell me to go home because "if you're done, you don't need to clock-watch til 5 PM"
2. Won our department HR's monthly trivia game
3. Had my boss walk into my office at 10:45 this morning to tell me to take off and work the rest of the day from home.
Almost every single interaction I've had within my new office makes me so thankful I got out of my old job. I don’t think I truly realized how bad things were at the other one until now, where suddenly I'm treated like an adult and given some semblance of agency.
