Job and General Employment Thread

Source of the post They're also redesigning everything to the open floor plan hive environment, clusters of half-wall cubes with little common areas. Great! Oh, wait, I'm an enterprise asset that doesn't work with the local team at all. So I will have to do my job while dodging everyone else's phone and sidebar conversations. Yay.
They did that at my previous job when we moved to a new building and it lasted 3 months before they installed full-height cube walls. That same company is once again doing it for their new building where all IS staff are moving to later this year, which makes sense given that they never seem to learn their lesson. Everyone is going to hate it and complain about it non-stop, so I expect them to spend more money converting the existing cubes after the fact than simply doing it the right way from the start. Open environments simply do not work in IT 99% of the time.

I work from home for weeks at a time. In my new role I'll have to be in office all the time. That stinks but more $$$ and steady daylight out at 430 which means no more late shifts. I'll take the trade-off.

Is it inappropriate to mention a job opening to an employee for a similar position to one that employee currently holds?

Here's the situation: I have a mediocre employee that commutes 90 minutes each way to work here (she also rents an apartment and stays there a couple of days a week). She's the one who never puts her time sheet in on time, doesn't play well with others, and brings nothing to the table.

A job - technically a downgrade, but as it's a state job probably an increase in pay - opened up 20-30 minutes from her house. I'm reasonably sure she saw it on the same listserv...but man, getting rid of her would be great.

Would it be appropriate to send her that job ad? Or no?

I wouldn't see a problem with it, if you presented it as you looking out for her well-being and not an attempt to push her out the door. But the government sector is a lot more open about that kind of stuff so I may not be calibrated correctly.

If you think there is a possibility she'll take it wrong and make a fuss about it, just abort.

Given the previous history, absolutely. Just word it like you were looking out for her (namely the commute).

It would probably be seen as inappropriate but, from the facts given, seems reasonable. Maybe try to play up the increase in pay and less driving, if you decide to do so.

I think I may talk with our HR first. This employee is a bit...prickly.

There's another factor here: her son graduates from high school and is off to college next year. If he stays in NC, she'll get the in-state tuition as a NC resident. If he goes to a small private school, she'll need to still work here to get our reciprocal agreement to get the tuition reduced. She's also openly complained about the low salary here as being a factor about looking elsewhere (although not recently). And with our budget freeze and 10% cut to our operating budget for next fiscal year, it doesn't look good for raises.

Ask HR to address it. The issue is that if you put this forward as her manager and she responds poorly. You've now poisoned the relationship.

  1. Print out the job description
  2. Put on gloves
  3. Grab print out from the printer and leave it on her desk

I would not be the one that pushes (in any way) another job on someone on my team unless they were a friend of mine and I knew they were actively seeking employment elsewhere. That doesn't sound like a match for this situation. So if you're gonna go down this road, I'd be a lot more clandestine about it or, better yet, leave it alone...

I have no idea what it's from, just that I've been getting a lot of use out of it within the last month or so.

Boy howdy, my separation from The Gorilla gets peachier and peachier. They mailed all my stuff to the wrong address (old apartment in the city), and since I didn't know about it for two weeks the stuff just sat there, the apartment management company is returning the boxes to Sony. So it will be like another two weeks until I get all my toy planes and Alien tchochkes back.

Also, two weeks before they let me go I got an alert from LinkedIn that they were looking for someone with my title. There had been talk about new headcount for the team, so I thought that's what it was. Nope. Turns out, they posted for my position two weeks before pulling the you're-fired trigger. That seems a bit irresponsible.
