Why two weeks ago? Is there a specific thing they were waiting on? The one thing that I learned after my two layoffs is that you should never EXPECT a position, EVEN ONE THAT HAS A START DATE IN WRITING. I don't get why people fire off emails like that. Do they expect the recipient to say "oh, you're right. I was wrong in what I did. You know what, I should write them back and apologize for the errors of my ways. Maybe I can smooth things over and even offer them the job"?We always strive to notify people if they have not been selected, or if the position has been filled. For lower-level positions that get 100+ applicants, obviously there is no way we are going to have the time to review/screen every single applicant, so a lot of it is the earlier you apply. In any event, this just goes to show that even if you try and do the right thing....
You should have let me know this two weeks ago.
You are a poor *redacted* and I WILL NEVER RECOMMEND YOU.
ACTUALLY I WILL DO THE OPPOSITE.
EMAILING IS THE EASY WSY OUT.... YOU should have let me know when YOU knew that I was no longer a candidate.
I hope your new person screws you up

Just put my retirement date on the calendar. October 5th, 2028 here I come. A short nine years four months away. (20 years creditable service, pension deferred to 62)

You know, I'm not sure how I never knew this but for federal service there are no retirement tiers. I thought once I reached twenty-years I hit a multiplier like they do in the military. Turns out the time portion of the formula is just based on years of creditable service so once I hit the floor, which is this month, I am just working towards increasing that variable. So I can really retire at any time, the 20 years is arbitrary.
*goes to delete the calendar entry* October 5th, 2028 is just another day, bruv.

Retiring in your 40s? Your pension must be insane.

I'd be 45 if I did the 20, yeah.
This is just to get out of being a slave to the man and starting my own business. I have to work, the sit-on-the-beach retirement isn't for me. I'd retire from the fed gig at 45 and hopefully by then I will have built my law firm up to something that can buy enough ramen to sustain me. Then hopefully by the time I"m 62 and my fed pension kicks in I am successful enough in my second career that I can enjoy an actual retirement.
The alternative is a 40 year federal career and retire with a single fat pension, but that's inconsequential as I would've killed myself sometime about a decade before I got to 40.

I can see where you're coming from there. My plan is to work into my early 50s, 'retire', and just do something different for a while until actual retirement age.

My tentative plan is to work another 12 years or so - to get both my kids through college (if they wish) using the tuition reciprocation/remission programs I have at my current employer. I will then "retire" at 57 and take a smaller role at a community college or public library either in Hilton Head or the Morehead City/Beaufort/Atlantic Beach NC area. I want to live near the ocean for my dotage. My wife, a year younger than I am, can officially retire in 7.5 years (SC teacher retirement is 30 years). Probably need to clear this with her first though.

I have a standing offer to work in a law firm in MHC. We could be Condo Coast neighbors.

I really love that part of NC, and it would be a hell of a lot cheaper than HHI. But I really love Hilton Head...

I was born and lived in Carteret/Craven county half of my life, including my time in the military. We have a lot of friends there still and honestly Pittsburgh hasn't really wow'd us in our return so our eyes are starting to wander back to the Crystal Coast.

My dad has been trying to convince my mom to just move to HHI for years. It'll probably happen once the grandchildren all get a little older, or somebody else moves away first.I really love that part of NC, and it would be a hell of a lot cheaper than HHI. But I really love Hilton Head...

I've gotten into the habit of locking. Such an easy thing to do, but it's amazing how many people don't care.I just can't see walking around here telling users not to walk away from their computer if it's unlocked for 25 more years...
What's the IT take of end of day procedure? Would you rather people A) lock, B) sign out, or C) shut down their PC's when they leave?

We have to use our CAC to login to the machine. It's considered a very serious breach if a user leaves their computer without taking the CAC with them.
Leaving the machine on to receive network scans and updates at night is the mandate; doesn't matter if the user is signed in or not. Leaving a machine at the Bitlocker screen is completely useless from just about everyone's point of view.

I couldn’t imagine working in any environment in which policies weren’t setup to automatically lock a device after a certain amount of time.

Fascist.

In my case they do lock after a few minutes, but it's still a violation.
