Since when have recruiters deemed it appropriate to send unsolicited text messages? (In addition to the voice mail and two emails)

Received a job offer for a position with a dynamic company in Culvar City California. Great company working with exciting new technology and medicine.
They offered me a decent salary.
The problem? I just searched Trullia and determined that most apartments (one bedroom - I'm single) start at around $2500 / month, or $30K a year just for rent. Add on California taxes, the higher cost of living, I'm thinking anything less than $125k a year is treading water.

So I think I’m going to at least have a conversation w my former boss to see about the open position there. I just don’t see certain things I’m unhappy with here changing. I literally cannot think of one thing about the actual work here that I like. So that in itself merits consideration of the other position. I guess once I talk to them I’ll either know what to do or have enough information to do the ol’ pros & cons list.
Oddly, I feel extremely guilty for even thinking about bailing from here even though I’m generally miserable. I wish I could be one of those people that works their 8 hours and leaves everything at the office...where a job is just a job.

Average rent for a 1 BR in LA is about $2k, so you're overestimating that cost by a healthy factor. Did you just search by the employer's ZIP code? West LA is pricier. Try searching the 90048 or 90036 ZIPs.Received a job offer for a position with a dynamic company in Culvar City California. Great company working with exciting new technology and medicine.

Methinks you need to look harder. I found a 1 BR/1 BA apartment for $1100I'm single) start at around $2500 / month, or $30K a year just for rent. Add on California taxes, the higher cost of living, I'm thinking anything less than $125k a year is treading water.

Finally get myself to the point where I'm going to go for the other job. Tell former boss yesterday that I'll update my resume and get it over to her.
Come to work this morning with a long email from her telling me not to apply for the job. Long story short, she has a degenerative issue and needs surgery. The company insurance won't pay. If she had one of the 2 other major carriers it would be no issue. So now she told me don't apply, she's telling HER boss (who I also used to work with) that she's telling me not to apply. Essentially, she can't have me come work there in good conscience because of the crappy health insurance.
My heart sank. I just psyched myself up that I was maybe going to get out of here.
Chances are very low I'll apply anywhere else. Too afraid I'll end up in another situation like this. Might as well stick it out here and get time under my belt. I'm sick, though.

Gotta pull yourself up and look past this one bad job. You have a better idea of what to look for in future employers now. Do more research on the company itself, interview existing employees (both short and long timers) during your interview.Source of the post Chances are very low I'll apply anywhere else. I've worked at 3 different places with 7 different bosses over 19 years, and only 1 would I say was a bad boss. And even in that situation, I didn't have an issue with him, it was other coworkers that had the issue. Maybe I'm the lucky one, but I tend to believe most jobs are not as bad as the one you are in now.

I've had a string of fantastic bosses since I reentered the workforce in 2012. I think it's some kind of karmic mulligan for having to deal with terrible Marine 'leaders' for nearly my entire enlistment.

Thanks! Do you live in that area? Since the job is in Culvar City I was concerned about the commute.Average rent for a 1 BR in LA is about $2k, so you're overestimating that cost by a healthy factor. That Compton apartment accepts Section 8 housing vouchers too...probably not a great part of Compton.

1) It's Culver City. Thanks! Do you live in that area? Since the job is in Culvar City I was concerned about the commute.
2) I lived in Los Angeles for 20 years before moving to San Francisco in 2016.
3) Every commute in LA is awful, even the walking distance ones. That's just how it works, and is the price for a year-round average temperature of 72 degrees.
Don't let shaf's latent prejudices ( ) or an arbitrary name on a map fool you. Not all of Compton is gangbangers, drive bys, and urban plight. If you look at something like crimereports.com, there weren't any reported incidents of violent or property crime in that ZIP code in the last calendar year outside the 110 freeway corridor. Mrs Tif worked in Compton for close to ten years.Compton? Yeah, no thanks.
Frankly, I'd have been better off living nearly anywhere in Compton than the Koreatown neighborhood I actually did live in. There was a huge LAPD corruption scandal that was in the process of breaking when I moved there involving the CRASH anti-gang unit in the Rampart police division, and my apartment building was two blocks north of the geographic center of that territory. So I got to live that ish every day, which was a total hoot.

So I have to interview three people coming in this week for a spot in our group. I've never been on the other side of the interview process. I don't know what to do other than ask questions about their resume.

What are you trying to actually accomplish? Discover competency? Culture fit? General intelligence?

Probably a combo of competency and "can I work with this dude?"...
