as far as i can tell, the extent of javascript programming is to copy code from stack overflow and tweak it until it works.

The same can be said for basically any scripting language. :)

kind of...for me, though, i work with ColdFusion and SQL. i rarely look any of the syntax up, and can build the foundation of any of my applications without other languages. i don't like putting a ton of intelligence in a client-side language.

Source of the post What do you guys actually do for a living?
IT Specialist - InfoSec

I work for a small federal government agency in their Network Enterprise Center. My primary duty is workstation compliance, patching and upgrades. We're so understaffed, though, so I'm getting the opportunity to work on policy which is uncommon at my pay grade. I'm considering putting in for a promotion/job change to the Servers division for the money but my heart is in InfoSec. I'm sitting for my CISSP in a few weeks, pretty anxious about it, in a good way.

I wish I could code. The Masters I applied for at PSU requires me to know Python so that will be the hand the forces me to actually sit down and learn. For now all I'm good for is SQL/WQL scripts and PowerShell.

Python would be easier to learn than the jumbled mess of crap that javascript is, IMO. I never cared for c++/# in school, and basically only use PowerShell now. It was a rough transition for me to PS from vbscript, but everything Microsoft is PS driven now, and there's so much you can do.

Yeah, and in my line of work I can count the number of Redhat machines I encounter in a year on one hand. We're going to upgrade to Win10E this year so once I get past CISSP I'll probably cert up on the MS Win10 Exam(s) while I wait for school to start in the fall.

i took java and C++ in college. built programs. got A's. and i have zero clue how object oriented languages and concepts like polymorphism would actually be used in a practical sense.

We just started working on the MDT images for Win10E, so we'll likely do the same, which is rare in healthcare. Our biggest stumbling block is going to be application compatibility, given that we have literally hundreds of applications in our environment from mega corporations to Bob's App Shack stuff.

OOP is really really nice. I couldn't imagine developing without it.

Polymorphism is useful, but some developers overuse it when it's not really necessary.

Yeah, same. Win10 will flatly tell you that it's not even going to try to run software that isn't perfectly suited to Win10 so that's going to be a challenge for some of our proprietary packages.

A friend of mine is a IT worker for Denver schools. They switched to Win10e as soon as it came out (bold strategy, Cotton) and it has gone great. I'm jealous.

Python is what a lot of the HTPC software I use was written in. I'd love to be able to code, I just don't have the patience.

The government deciding to use Windows servers somehow makes sense. ;)

At the very least, we'll use Win10 as an excuse to start converting a lot of these apps to App-V/Citrix (which is the route I'd like to take with most apps first).

We're still on IE9 at the very large Fortune 500/Wall Street firm that employs me.

I just posted this in the other thread, but End of Life was Tuesday. IE9 is no longer supported.

The EOL affects something like 19.2% of current internet users.

The given reason is that a lot of our webapps and portals were developed specifically for it.

I think the real reason is because it can't load webpages and keeps people off the internet.

Title is software developer, but I am essentially 1/3rd of a small electronics company. Literally it is the President/CEO, office administrator, and myself. I manage all of the manufacturing of our products when it comes to building, fixing, designing new product, etc. manage our Verizon customers (~200), repair any systems that aren't functioning, incorporate new hardware into our systems, take tech calls/emails from current or potential customers, and help with shipping product. I'm sure there is more things I do on a daily basis but needless to say I am often busy.
