Job and General Employment Thread
I just had beers yesterday with 2 people that I worked with 6 months ago. We all ditched the company when they told us they were moving. And the company was completely surprised by all 3 of us going. They completely f’ed themselves and I’m here to watch the train wreck (pun intended)

Listening to our town hall, and they announced new changes to the return to office initiative. Currently, those who are assigned to an office are there 50% of the time. Basically, 3 days one week, 2 the next, etc. It is now 3-days per week, with Tuesday and Wednesday being mandatory in-office. Can't imagine that people are going to be happy with that change.

I don’t disagree with a 3 day requirement but forcing people to come in on specific days can suck it
Job and General Employment Thread
but how else are you going to force collaboration lol

We were on 3 days since Jan 1 but recently my boss realized that we were the only team in the building following that rule so we're back to 2 days. We don't have set days but we did decide as a team what days to come in on. Coming in without anybody else would be pretty pointless.

I'd love to see the data behind what they said in the town hall. "We have seen great improvements"... prove it.

@MalkinIsMyHomeboy Sorry man. This place has been hit hard with layoffs over the past 6-12 months. Seems like everyone ended up better off though for the most part. I'm sure you will too.

What, no recently separated NHL player they can put in there? Sounds like a job for Malcolm Subban.

I imagine it’d be more of a behind the scenes role that would use former and current players to come in and draw the community’s interest. Say famous King Henrik backup Martin Biron or famous bad boy of Rangers hockey Sean Avery. What, no recently separated NHL player they can put in there? Sounds like a job for Malcolm Subban.

thanks for the condolences
I'll admit it's very emotionally complex but not all bad. After I had resigned from my other job 2 years ago I kind of realized that I wanted to get out of the corporate hellhole. I eventually got back into it with this last job (a bank) because there was the promise of building my own team and I had expressly stated in my interviews that I wanted to eventually build in a four day work week with my team (which the interviewers appreciated). After having worked at this company for 1.5 years I unfortunately learned how toxic it all was. The dev team under me was treated really poorly with ridiculous expectations from upper management and from business users. I was making very good money so I wasn't planning on quitting any time soon but I'll be honest; it sucked part of my soul away. A lot of my team that I hired already knew me from our last company and tbh I think they're all gonna start dusting off their resumes because without me to help protect them they're probably not gonna have a super fun time
I am a little anxious about the future but it's more anxiety about change more than how will I live. I have a lot of money saved up so I'm not worried about that in particular. It's just that I know in my heart of hearts I want to get out of this (corporate) world. Not sure how exactly...I personally have an idea for a business (but it's pretty ambitious and the thought of pursuing it causes me a bit of anxiety...this has been a constant topic of convo with my therapist) but also my gf owns a business in Colombia and part of me wants to figure out with her if we could somehow make that work.
So in a way I kind of look at this as a blessing in disguise. I know I wanted to get out of there at some point; just happened sooner than I wanted. I'm so **** sick of heartless corporations though. Sucking the life out of everyone

Were you completely caught off guard by the layoff? Or did you get a sense it was coming? The out of blue layoff would scare the **** out of me.

completely caught off guard. I had noticed that someone else was in the 1:1 with my boss but I assumed it was his secretary who helped to set up the meeting
I admit I'm not the hardest worker of all-time (because **** that noise) so I'm guessing my boss and the guy who's absorbing my team discussed that I would be easy "fat to cut" which is whatever. I'm not offended by that concept because the job kind of sucked. I'm just mad that I couldn't milk them for more money, honestly

What languages do you like to code/program in? (no obligation to answer this if you don't want to)

I've been in the Salesforce world for the last 8 years which has a proprietary language called Apex, which is similar to Java, and also Javascript
I wouldn't say I like it, but it's more of a nice little niche. For me it's less about the language and more about the application/product and how engaged I am in it. Designing and then implementing, etc
