Job and General Employment Thread

The only work-related thing I use my phone for is Okta/SSO & MFA stuff. Mrs Tif otoh uses her employer-provided iPad Pro as her primary point of contact to the Internet of things - Facebook, Amazon, etc - and it drives me batty.

This could go here... could go in the beer thread... could go in the science and technology thread... meh. I'm putting it here.

Here's some background reading on what we did...

viewtopic.php?p=959928#p959928

When analyzing the beer for metal content, the one in the uncoated system had about 25-35% more metal in it, depending on where it was along the way of beer production. Some processes (fermentation mostly) will consume some of the metals, which causes the differences. I mentioned that I measured the polyphenol content, and it's ~20 ppm different when measured the fermented beer. I did not measure the carbonated beer yet. There were also measurable differences in anti-oxidant activity of the two beers. I'm still waiting on chemicals to quantify the difference.

In addition to that, I teamed up with a professor at Penn State who is doing some some analysis where he (and one of his undergrads) are doing a quantitative study of some of the most prevalent flavor compounds in the beer. I'll share those results as I get them as well.

Today I set up a sensory panel for volunteers from our company. They were given 3 samples, 2 of one beer and 1 of the other... some were given 2 from the bare metal system, some were given 2 from the coated system. Their job was to identify the one that was different. To my surprise 14 of the 24 participants were able to correctly identify the odd one out. The p value is just over 0.01, which essentially means that there is a statistical difference in taste between the two beers.

Part of the analysis was asking what difference they detected. Pretty much all the people that correctly identified the different beer said that the one that was brewed with our coated system was a clean, crisp aftertaste, while the one brewed in the non-coated system had a lingering aftertaste.

Future experiments will be on foam stability, aging the beer to re-analyze later, and of course brew another couple batches. A stout and a hop forward beer to see if differences arise there as well.

I love my job.

So my wife went to another career fair today. It was 12 miles from her office. This time she drove alone, not with her boss, as she went solo. So, when she got back she told her boss that she was going to throw in a mileage expense report for 24 miles since gas isn't cheap these days. Her boss got livid and said she should've taken a company car if she was going to expense mileage.

Hey boss, how about OFFERING THAT IN ADVANCE? Shut the F up and let my wife get the $13 expense for her mileage.

This woman is so unfit for management it's not even funny.

You get too riled up over these things. “Oh ok I’ll know that for next time” and everyone moves on

Na. Maybe I've just been fortunate my entire career to have managers who care about me and are competent. Which means I hold her to a higher standard. "sure, expense it this time, but next time let's discuss using a company vehicle to avoid this" is the correct response. The company makes $500 million in revenue. They can give an employee 25 miles worth of fuel expense.

It's less about processing and more about network speed. This is a 100 gb After Effects project that I was told was complete 3 months ago, so I moved all of the files off my local drive to the cloud. Now a change is needed and the only way to make that change is to redownload everything.

I'm surprised how many people are anti-work phone. A huge part of my job is on the phone every day, and I do not want candidates and whatnot to have my personal cell number. Plus, I like being able to silent my work phone after hours and not think about it until the next day.

I do agree that I would never, ever want my company email, etc. loaded on my personal phone.

Simple, 100% of my calls are via Teams. I haven't used my work phone in over 2 years.

I have Teams installed on my work phone because I like to do those Teams calls over my bluetooth earpiece, and not through the laptop.

To your point, I can see how that would work if all of your clients/calls were internal. With all of the external calls I make, a work phone is a must.

I like having a work phone. I laugh when I hear it ring from the other room after hours.

I set my desk phone to forward to my cell after 3 rings. No one gets my cell, but I don't miss calls during the day, either.

This is one of the many benefits of working in IS. Cell phones are for emergencies, Teams is for everything else.

I have a work phone, that I rarely use. Teams and Outlook are on it - but I don't really use them.

This reminds me of a big work peeve. People that apply to jobs and when you call them, their voicemail is full. Dummies.

Dunno how people can let their voicemails get full. I get annoyed by the blinking red light on my phone and always clear any missed calls and delete voicemails.

 10 voicemails since March 2020. Jabber doesn't seem to show missed calls isn't tracking in our config, which is what I was really looking for. I used to get non-stop calls from vendors.

Any of them due to your warranty being up?

No, those are all reserved for my god damn cell phone, apparently. Three of those 10 were from family members.
