So I spent the day hanging out with this guy:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainer_Weiss

Just chatting about the cosmos and the universe and physics and chemistry... It was by far one of the coolest moments of my career thus far. He's coming back tomorrow to give a lecture that I'll be introducing him to the audience and moderating questions and whatnot.

That's awesome that he and his two co-discoverers were still alive a half century later to receive their Nobel.

Well, it's official. January 10th all staff must return to office. Coincidentally Jan 10th is also the date that all staff must be vaccinated.

We are basically still at one day a week in the office, four days at home. Honestly though I haven't been into the office in a couple months even after that policy got instituted because my boss doesn't care cause I get stuff done.

With that said there was an email that just went out saying they are closing our office as of 1pm today and for the rest of the week because there has been "several" confirmed cases of covid-19 over the past several days.

One of the guys on my team called me today to let me know that he submitted his retirement paperwork. We’ve worked together for 7-8 years now, and he’s one of my favorite people on the team. His institutional knowledge is going to be a big loss, and he’s one of the best guys to run ideas by for a devil’s advocate sorta deal.

I’m probably the obvious choice to replace him in his role, but I want nothing to do with reporting directly to our manager. I don’t trust him, and quite honestly don’t care for him. The bump in title and pay isn’t worth it to me if it means switching reports. The guy I report to now is somebody I trust completely, and have been friends with for a long time.

Wife’s work gave their employees a key fob good for a free Junior Frosty (with purchase) every day for a year at Wendy’s in their Christmas cards.

Better or worse than just the card?

I was able to get a grant of sorts from a neighboring institution whose students use our library facilities/services. With the grant, I can hire another position that will specifically help the students from this institution as well as our own.

Conveniently, I have a student worker who graduated (this morning actually) who would be a perfect fit for this job. We posted the job at the beginning of November, and only have six applicants for it to this point. Two are people that apply for everything in my department and aren't suitable for the job, and the other three have no relevant library experience.

Knowing I'm putting in notice in January, I really want to have this person hired and ready to go when we come back in early January. I ask HR to cut the others loose, and offer to our student...and she responds that we need to talk to the other applicants.

I get it. We're an equal opportunity employer, but when these folks have no shot at this job, why do I have to waste my time (and theirs, and getting their hopes up) to just check boxes? This is after HR failed to properly share resumes with the search committee and then turning it around and blaming me for not finding that out sooner.

I think that’s schools and health systems in general, as both my previous employer and current employer do the same. At my last job, I was promoted 3 times. Each time, they had to post my job, and if anyone applied for it, they were generally granted an interview. It wasted their time, as they had no shot at the job, and everyone else’s. It’s a practice that makes no sense to me whatsoever. Perhaps there’s some sort of law requiring it? Don’t know.

I’ve started doing a little workaround when it comes to those situations. I’m real big on promotion from within, so when a senior leaves, I generally downgrade the position to an intermediate then promote an intermediate into the vacant senior role. A linear promotion within a team does not need to be posted. Now I need to fill an intermediate with an outside hire instead of senior. It’s an easier road.

We do the same at FedGov. Have folks "compete" for jobs they are already temp promoted into. Makes for a fun interview when the panel is your current team.

so we have a lady who is friends with my boss who likes to visit and BS with him. A lot.

I generally don't care, except that I'm getting complaints from other people in the hallway asking why she's down here so much (she works on the other side of the building). So now that more people have noticed, I've turned it into a bit of a game. At the beginning of the day, I'll ask the three people in my hallway how long she will be down here today. On Thursday, it was over an hour (1:07:34 to be exact). Today, she's at 48:06.34 and we're not even at lunch break yet.

Update: we are now at 1:25:09.75 with 2.5ish hours to go.

Money is getting thrown around as to whether the 2 hour mark will be broken today.

I don't think we're gonna crack 2:00:00 today. There's about a half hour left in her workday and we have about 25 minutes that need to happen. Clock is sitting at 1:35:20 as we speak.

The month of December. An absolute grind because half of the month is PTO and the other half is just trying to get to PTO with as little responsibility as possible.

How many people here have a boss who is not in their same city? I just met my new boss, who sits in Chicago. I don't have a good feeling about this.

I have to the past 8 years and I love it. No need to see them in person.
