Job and General Employment Thread

Source of the post My office is in the guest room, most of the time my dogs are just sleeping on the bed all day, but there was one time they were aggressively wrestling in the background.
Mine is in a nook in my master bedroom, so there's always a chance of a cat fight going on behind me. The last time I had my camera on, my buddy told me he was enjoying the kitten beat the hell out of the other one, which I didn't even know was happening.

I have one meeting a week where video is generally required...but other than that, I really don't like being on camera...it's distracting to me...

Have a few people that are hardcore video callers for meetings. I hate it.
As in, they always have their camera turned on? In our team meetings, I'd say that it's 50/50. I turn mine on every 3rd meeting so that I'm not always keeping it off, but nobody actually cares.
I've got five people who insist on having their videos on all the time, and by design make me turn my video on. My boss does it, I don't care about that one personally.

The other 3-4 I have weekly syncs with that ALWAYS run video. It's all at the leadership level, so not turning it on always comes across as negative to me.

For the people I manage, I do it once a month in our group meeting - just to keep it going, but I'd prefer to never be on camera if possible.

It now feels weird when there’s no video. I prefer it to be on, unless I’m talking to my team, who I’ve known forever. Ironically, it’s more awkward doing video with people I’m close to.

My interview starts at 9, and I've been wide awake since 4 am. My Fitbit thinks I'm exercising my heart rate is so elevated. I'm confident in my presentation and my ability to do this job, but man this is tearing me up lol.

Every interview that I've had where I felt it went really well has ended with me not getting the job.

I had an interview yesterday for another job within Pitt. I left the Zoom call feeling like I didn't do great/missed on a couple things that I should have nailed. Got a call this morning that I made it to the 2nd round next week.

It doesn't make any sense lol.

I'm sure you'll crush it, DG.

I applied for a position at one of our customers. It was very strange having a teleconference with them today. The contact for the job was on the call. I've had dozens of meetings with them before, but this time it felt like a mini interview.

It went really well! They laughed at my jokes, complimented me on my presentation details, and I left with a really good feeling.

Now I wait another 3 weeks for them to finish interviews and the labyrinthian HR process.

Similar job duties as now? Your current place sounds like a sinking ship.

Right now I wear about six hats. At the new job, I would be wearing ONLY my favorite hat and would have a supporting cast to make sure the hat is taken care of, fits properly etc. They are also in the middle of an expansion - a new annex building and a gut and remodel of the existing building - to the tune of $25million. That's exciting, because this university obviously believes in the importance of its library.

Another cool thing is that nearly all of their physical books are going into remote storage, freeing up lots of space for study, group collaboration areas, and so on. Want a book? Just request it and it will be delivered to our building for pickup or delivery to faculty offices and eventually residence halls. Pretty neat. Some of the libraries in Atlanta have a similar remote storage program.

lol yes. I am a firm believer in mindset, that if I wore cargo shorts I would not have been in the right mindset for the interview. Lame? Probably.

Mostly college professor/librarian inside jokes. Like the pain in the ass faculty that complain about the most trivial things for no reason.

I applied for a position at one of our customers. It was very strange having a teleconference with them today. The contact for the job was on the call. I've had dozens of meetings with them before, but this time it felt like a mini interview.
Received information back from the customer that they are pushing my interest up the chain of command and that my resume fits their needs. Been thinking about this one lately and think I'd take it if offered a good deal. It's technically a start-up, but a very big profile with at least 5-10 years of future, more if their technology takes off.

Also got an email from a headhunter that saw my resume online. This is an even smaller startup, with only 5 employees. But it's very intriguing to me because it mixes my engineering background with my hobby of gardening. It was started by a couple of Pitt students (H2P) and has already received a couple big orders from large agricultural companies. It would be a very big leap for me trying to raise a family, but I'm at least going to listen to what they have to offer. I missed out on working for Trek before they became big, and always thought of it as a lost opportunity (although it was them that didn't chose me, not the other way around).

Why couldn't these jobs have come 10 years ago when I didn't have kids?

The bigger start-up, if offered, pays very well according to info I've received. If I could stretch that job into a 15 year career, it may be enough for me to retire on. But it could blow up in 5 years, giving me a little bit of hesitancy. I'd be OK if it did, and would probably build a bigger emergency fund for that very reason.
