The kickoff meeting for the new policy at the beginning of the year was funny. HR was trying to sell it as a benefit, yet several people were quick to point out the massive company benefit and disadvantages to the employees.

HR's response? but unlimited vacationz!

quite honestly if there's a good atmosphere and vacation isn't being frowned upon it's good for both sides

The only reason I disagree with this is because of your earlier point - no accrued vacation time payout if you leave. That and most companies I know of doing this aren't doing it for the benefit of the employees.

The max payout I would have ever gotten would be maybe 2 weeks of time.. it's been worth the extra time I take each year now. And yeah of course they aren't. But that still doesn't affect the end product here. It's the atmosphere of making you feel guilty for taking anything over what you got before that makes it a net negative if that's the case. My firm did it for their sake, but it's still been good to most of us. I guess what I'm getting at is YMMV by a lot depending what kind of place you work at

The real disadvantage I see is the unfair treatment of employees with a large amount of service time. Not only will they be less likely to use their 5 weeks of vacation, but their seniority and self-importance to the team will make them feel like they can't take the vacation.

Compare that to newbs coming out of school (which is who this is catered to, HR openly admitted) who are going to come in and take 4 weeks off the bat.

Vacation is no longer an earned benefit like paycheck or bonus (haha!) where the harder/longer you work, the more you make - it is just there. Which is fine for most people, including me who plans to take more than the 3 weeks I would have had otherwise. But it definitely hurts those with a) a harder work ethic and b) those that are more senior.

I had a phone interview with HR on Friday at lunch. During it, she said she'd be passing my info along to the hiring manager and he'd likely want to set up a phone interview with him. She said she'd be reaching out with availability soon. I haven't heard anything yet, though. I guess I'll let it ride a little longer being the current climate.

My guess is they have a lot on their plate at the moment. I wouldn't read much into it.

Our VPN is having a rough start to this week. Lots of people dropping every 30 seconds or so. Citrix, so far, seems stable.

We have MS teams and O365 (with Entrust for VPN). But, I can essentially work without VPN for the most part as the former two don't require it.

We got a communication to basically stay off the VPN unless you really need it. Most of my work doesn't need it, so I'm only on it sporadically. THe product support team who takes calls from customers needs to be on it for the IP phone, and I can't imagine that is going well.

At my physical office today, no WFH mandate. No one has said anything about anything. The dept VP told us to make sure we could WFH if it got to that point, but it's business as usual here. I think it sends a bad message.

Not to mention, can't get my hair or my nails done where only 6 people are together at one time, but, by God, I better be at work with 100 other people!

Considering what his home country was - that's a very interesting question.

One nice thing with limited PTO is it’s use it or lose it so I end up taking 10-15 days off a year. With unlimited, I would feel guilty doing that
Ding ding ding. And companies know that. I've said this before, but the reason why companies move to unlimited PTO (in addition to the reasons dodint mentioned) is that they want employees to feel like they are competing against one another as to who is the most loyal and takes the least time off. I would MUCH rather get my allotment every year.
And the insulting part is they present it as a good thing for you.

We're being forced to interview a candidate for my team this afternoon that has literally zero qualifications (she's a project manager), but we have to interview her for "diversity reasons". Our team is already racially diverse, but I guess we have to waste everyone's time anyway just to say that we did.

We have two full time professionals on maternity leave (we have like 12? in our office usually so it's a big hit). A few of us have been doing crazy hours to make up the shortfall. Our bonuses get paid in August and I think covid is totally gonna **** me. Ugh

In this episode, NTP gets Rooney Rule'd...?
We took the Rooney Rule to a new level. A few months ago, management sent out a broadcast e-mail showing promotions in upper management. Ten women, one man. The only reason I point this out is because at least three of those women are totally unqualified for their positions, and only got them because of previous relationships with the hiring executive.
